3-Way Tie: Booker T & Goldust/Los Guerreros/The World’s Greatest Tag Team
On the heels of WWE’s less-than-stellar Invasion storyline, the WWE found itself with a talent surplus and as the unquestionably dominant force in sports entertainment.
With RAW and SmackDown separated as two distinct brands, the early 2000s saw a number of legendary tag teams split. Bubba Ray Dudley, Christian, and Jeff Hardy became RAW fixtures, while D-Von Dudley, Edge, and Matt Hardy struck out on their own as singles stars on SmackDown.
There was a vacuum created in WWE’s tag team division. Evolution and the remnants of The New World Order dominated RAW, but the biggest standout that wasn’t faction-based was Booker T & Goldust.
While Booker T was initially reluctant to team with “The Bizarre One,” but Goldust’s persistence paid off and the two won WWE tag team championship gold on one occasion. What set this team apart and helped them stand out on the roster during this period was their hilarious backstage segments and Booker T as the straight man for Goldust’s shtick.
On the blue brand, Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero Jr. teamed together as the lying, cheating, and stealing protagonists of the SmackDown roster. While the two had their own share of comedic segments, the talent of Los Guerreros in the ring couldn’t be denied.
Eddie & Chavo excelled at both technical and cruiserweight styles making for consistent and entertaining matches. Additionally, Los Guerreros helped to create the character catalyst and new direction that Eddie Guerrero needed to propel him along in the singles division.
That brings us to The World’s Greatest Tag Team. Formerly Kurt Angle’s enforcers under the moniker Team Angle, this team composed of Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin.
While The World’s Greatest Tag Team didn’t have many outstanding non-wrestling segments, it’s their wrestling that precisely gets them on this list. Two of arguably the most talented mat-technicians of their era. It’s time The World’s Greatest Tag Team got their due, and you just try listening to Shelton Benjamin’s solo theme and tell me it’s not a banger. I’d call you a liar.
