AEW Double or Nothing 2020: Staff Predictions Roundtable Discussion
By Bryan Heaton
AEW World Championship Match
Jon Moxley (c) vs. Brodie Lee
Bryan Heaton: I feel like I’m in the minority here, because I am not nearly as excited for this match as most other fans seem to be. Maybe it’s because Brodie came from out of nowhere and just decided he wanted a title match, I don’t really know. But I can’t see Moxley losing so soon into his run, or Brodie becoming world champion so early in his. It’ll be a great match, I’m sure, but in the end I think Mox wins.
Chris Jeter: Lee shouldn’t be losing any high profile matches at this stage of his AEW run, but, while a loss wouldn’t ding him too much, having Moxley lose the title so soon seems like a non-starter as well, particularly given that losing the title after having it stolen from him would neuter Mox a bit.
They could do a non-finish since this likely won’t be the main event, but that feels like the cheap way out. So, I’ll go with a time-limit draw to extend the feud and keep Mox on the chase for his belt.
Samantha Schipman: I’m happy to see Lee in AEW and have enjoyed what he’s done thus far. However, I believe that Mox should retain his title for multiple reasons, mainly because he’s just begun as champion. Yes, he’s held the title for 81 days as of Dynamite, but he’s defended it just once.
Like Nyla, Mox missed shows due to the novel coronavirus. He’s wrestled three times since February. Mox was the right person to become the second face of the company and he deserves a chance to prove that.
Amit Shukla: Jon Moxley vs. Brodie Lee is a good enough announcement to entice the fans and help them understand that they are in for a phenomenal match. With Jon and Brodie f.k.a. Dean, and Luke respectively, ready to put on a clinic for the AEW World Championship, one can expect nothing short of firecrackers when they step between those ropes.
Mox retaining the title is the right choice because Brodie needs to build his character in a better manner. His chosen wrestler lost to Jon in a singles match during the go-home episode, and that raises concerns over his ability to step up and guide people.
Jesse Velasquez: Another championship match involving a man who debuted for AEW after the Revolution PPV. Brodie Lee was revealed as The Exalted One and has done a solid job as the group’s leader.
Meanwhile, Jon Moxley has continued to be the most dominant wrestler in AEW. Both of these have a history from their days on the Independent circuit and the WWE. They will have a very compelling main event match, even if it was thrown together in the last 3 weeks.
Given more time, Lee could have put together a more presentable case to win this match. That being said, the Jon Moxley train is not ready to be derailed.
