Often heralded as the workhorse’s championship, we profile five of the greatest WWE Intercontinental Champions of all time as the company prepares to crown its latest incumbent.

Intercontinental Champions have been far from a rarity in WWE since the championship first debuted back in the 1970s. But, perhaps more than any other title in the company, there is an unspoken regard and respect for this title and those that hold it that you might not find for any other gold.

While the WWE Championship was always held by the biggest name in WWE, with the biggest pulling power, the Intercontinental Championship has a history of being carried by the hardest-working and most industrious competitor on the roster, capable of having the best match of the night regardless of his opponent.

For many, the Intercontinental Championship and, by extension, Intercontinental Champions are so fondly regarded as they represent our childhood. Feuds over the IC title were some of the best early memories I have of WWE programming and, with the likes of Savage, Steamboat, Austin and Rock all having battled over this coveted piece of gold, it’s easy to see why I’m not alone.

Back on May 13, the Intercontinental title was declared vacant by WWE with Sami Zayn unable to compete. A tournament to crown a new champion is already heading towards its final stages so, with that in mind, I’ve decided to cast my mind back over the years to identify 5 of WWE’s greatest Intercontinental Champions ever.
