WWE: The 5 greatest Intercontinental Champions ever
Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage
Understandably, given his incredible career, many people think of Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage, his runs as WWE Champion come to mind. As one of WWE’s most decorated Superstars of all time, though, there was plenty more to Savage than that.
Savage won the Intercontinental Championship back in 1986, defeating Tito Santana on an episode of Prime Time Wrestling. It was a rather unassuming and less-than-spectacular title win in comparison to many of Savage’s later ones, but it actually began what turned out to be one of the longest Intercontinental title reigns in history.
Savage, who later became a two-time WWE Champion, held the Intercontinental title for over 400 days, and even notched up a WrestleMania win in the process when he retained at the expense of George ‘The Animal’ Steele.
A year later, though, his reign would come to an end at the hands of Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania 3. Their match was one of the most critically-acclaimed matches in the rich history of WrestleMania, and was the perfect way to end a stellar reign for Savage.
Macho Man, of course, sadly passed away almost a decade ago after suffering a heart attack. He was nonetheless recognised with entry into the WWE Hall of Fame four years later.
