Impact Wrestling: Reflecting on Brian Cage’s biggest moments
A battle for the ages
Cage didn’t get to celebrate his title win for long before Michael Elgin debuted and laid him out. This set up a highly-anticipated battle for Slammiversary in July where the behemoths put on one of the best heavyweight scraps in some time.
Cage wasn’t in the main event spot for the second pay-per-view in a row (that went to the historic Blanchard/Callihan match), but that didn’t take anything away from what he accomplished that night.
Passing the torch for the new era
Bound For Glory 2018 was where Sami Callihan pinned Brian Cage, so it was only fitting that they renewed their rivalry at the 2019 installment. But this time, they would do battle in the main event with the top prize on the line.
In the end, a no disqualification stipulation served them well with Cage pulling out the surprise victory. If nothing else, retaining the World Title in the main event of Bound For Glory solidified what we already knew: Brian Cage can be the face of any company. It doesn’t get much better than that.
After reveling in the glory, their rivalry continued in wake of the AXS TV era, where Callihan was able to dethrone The Machine in a Steel Cage match. After that, Cage competed in a handful of matches to round out his historic year.
Unfortunately, he was robbed of his final pay-per-view match at Hard to Kill against Rob Van Dam thanks to a torn bicep. Rumors began swirling that he was AEW-bound, and they were proven to be true a few months later.
Brian Cage accomplished quite a bit during his two-year tenure in Impact. Injuries may have plagued the latter half, but at least he was able to put over the new faces of the company on his way out. He’s destined to do great things in AEW, and if history repeats itself, it may not be long before The Machine captures gold in his new home.
