Randy Orton and Edge will have the greatest match ever at WWE Backlash.

There’s no way the WWE Backlash 2020 match between Randy Orton and Edge lives up to the hype as the greatest match ever.

Vince McMahon’s promotional tactic for the two legendary superstars led to a lot of memes and even questions of a possible squash, but it didn’t lead to anyone actually being more hyped about the match.

What it did accomplish, however, was overlaying super high expectations on two veteran performers.

Orton and Edge put on an excellent Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania 36 – with the caveat that some understandably didn’t enjoy the length of the match – and now they are having a “regular wrestling match” at Backlash so that Edge can prove to Orton he still has it in the ring.

And beyond the realm of kayfabe, it sounds like he does.

A WWE source told the Wrestling Observer News’ Dave Meltzer, via WrestleZone’s Tyler Treese, that Orton and Edge had a “really, really good” match and worked “very hard” to have a high-quality psychological match.

You know, playing to their strengths.

The Orton vs. Edge match has been taped in advance for Backlash, and it will be interesting to see if that has any impact on the match format.

It isn’t the only match taped before the show, but it is a candidate to main event and has been a highly-anticipated non-title bout.

Although Orton and Edge have had great segments and (from the looks of it) matches (plural), it’s time for the former tag team partners to move on after Backlash. Hearing a highly positive review of Edge’s match with Orton should only lead to more hopeful dream matches from fans. Seth Rollins vs. Edge, anyone?

As for meeting the “greatest match ever” expectations, that was simply never going to happen. The Rated R Superstar said it himself. But a strong match on a “B” Pay Per View in June? That sounds like more than enough to satisfy WWE fans.
