WWE: Why Angel Garza is winning a title on Raw in 2020

WWE Raw’s Angel Garza is one of the fastest-rising stars in the company.

In February, Angel Garza made his debut on WWE Raw as a way for manager Zelina Vega to continue to play mindgames with Andrade’s then-United States Championship rival Humberto Carrillo. Garza and Carrillo are cousins, so, naturally, Vega wanted Garza to get in Carrillo’s head and provide a distraction for El Idolo to keep the title.

Since then, Apollo Crews has become United States Champion on Raw, and Garza’s latest storyline is one involving friction between himself and Andrade. Both men are ambitious, and while they would be stronger as a unit if they helped each other, they have not been on the same page.

And when it comes to Garza’s career prospects, that’s not a bad thing. Garza has shown that he has the charisma to branch off on his own. He doesn’t need to be with Zelina and Andrade, who have been a unit for years, winning the NXT Title and US Title together. Garza, a former NXT Cruiserweight Champion in his own right, has the tools to win a title on his own.

And before the year 2020 is up, I bet Garza will be the United States Champion on Monday Night Raw. Apollo should still have a few months in him as champion, even with MVP and Bobby Lashley seemingly ready to pursue the US Title this summer at Extreme Rules.

But down the road, Garza would be a great fit for the US Title if he and Andrade finally have a falling out – or if Vega decides to cut him loose due to the tense relationship between the two men in the stable…she’s already kicked out Austin Theory.

If Garza and Andrade’s dissent is merely a tease, the two could be major players and future champions in the Raw Tag Team Championship scene, which has suffered with only the Viking Raiders and Street Profits as real rivals.

No matter what, the future – and indeed, the near future – is bright for Garza. He does so many little things well, such as his charisma in brief backstage interviews or his gimmick of finding ways to take off his pants during his matches. Garza is wholesome and charming, even as he is cunning and power-seeking as a wrestler inside ring.

Vince McMahon himself is reportedly high on Garza, seeing the 27-year-old wrestler as a young Eddie Guerrero. It’s a lofty comparison, and it’s importance lies in the simple fact that it represents the high opinion of a mercurial boss. Garza seems to be one of the few young stars brought to the brand by Paul Heyman whom both the fans and Vince are high on, whereas Vince has either given up on or undermined others.

Drew McIntyre won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36 after being viewed by Heyman and McMahon as a key part of Raw. So it’s perfectly reasonable to anticipate forthcoming title success for Garza, who remains on an upward trajectory.
