WWE Rumors: Seth Rollins, Rey Mysterio might have an unorthodox stipulation match
Rey Mysterio and Seth Rollins have been involved in one of WWE’s most heated feuds over the past several weeks.
WWE fans are waiting for the Extreme Rules card to come together, with the show taking place on July 19. Asuka vs. Sasha Banks, Nikki Cross vs. Bayley, and Dolph Ziggler vs. Drew McIntyre are three major title matches booked for the show, and Universal Champion Braun Strowman will face rival Bray Wyatt in a Wyatt Swamp Fight cinematic match that is sure to grab headlines.
But the United States Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and three tag champions don’t have announced matches. Neither do major wrestlers involved in hot non-title feuds on either shows, such as Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio.
Rollins has been a crucial part of Raw during his heel run as the Monday Night Messiah, facing Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 36 and Drew McIntyre in an acclaimed WWE Title match at Money in the Bank. He’s producing some of the best work of his career now that he’s hitting his stride with this new character, and it all started when he smashed Mysterio’s eye into the steps.
The twisted Rollins has tried to take out Humberto Carrillo’s eye as well and is also directing his attention to Mysterio’s son Dominick. Rollins says that Mysterio must be sacrificed for the “greater good” of Monday Night Raw, insinuating that Mysterio must leave in order for young talent to shine on Monday nights.
It could all lead to a huge stipulation match at Extreme Rules, and you’d think an Extreme Rules match would be perfect for these two, who have been using steel steps and steel chairs.
Except the Wrestling Observer News’ Dave Meltzer reports, via WrestlingInc.com’s Kellie Haulotte, that WWE is planning on running an “Eye for an Eye Match” at Extreme Rules.
WWE has shown its willingness to book unorthodox, novel gimmick matches, and an Eye for an Eye would certainly fit the bill, even if appropriately named to reflect Rollins’ obsession with mangling the human eye.
Referencing Hammurabi’s Code is also a strong choice when referencing this rival, given the comeuppance Rollins surely must receive. But what on earth would an “Eye for an Eye Match” actually entail as a gimmick? I shudder to think of the possibilities, knowing Rollins’ diabolical mind and Mysterio’s understandable thirst for vengeance.
