SummerSlam 2016: Randy Orton

Two years after conquering John Cena at SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar entered 2016’s “Biggest Party of the Summer” riding a huge wave of momentum. The Beast had last competed at WrestleMania 32, where he successfully defeated Dean Ambrose in a No Holds Barred match. In fact, Lesnar hadn’t been pinned since WrestleMania 29 back in 2013, giving him the aura of an indestructible monster.

During his absence from WWE television, the company had chosen to recreate the Brand Split, a concept first adopted back in 2002. Lesnar would end up getting drafted to RAW, joining the likes of Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins to name a few. However, none of these superstars were destined to fight Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Instead, that honor was given to a veteran of WWE; Randy Orton.

Despite the fact that Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton broke into WWE around the same time, they had very little interaction going into 2016. A match featuring these two superstars at this stage of their careers was a dream contest to many, and at SummerSlam, fans finally got their wish. They expected a back and forth exchange between two greats, but what they got instead was a one-sided beatdown delivered by Brock Lesnar.

Save for a handful of moves (including two RKOs), Randy Orton had zero offense during the match.  Meanwhile, Lesnar took another victim to Suplex City, delivering multiple German suplexes to Orton before it was all said and done. By the end of the contest, the Viper was left in a bloody heap thanks to a series of stiff elbows to the skull by the Beast Incarnate.
