AJ Styles is the Intercontinental Champion, but he has no clear challenger on WWE SmackDown before SummerSlam

On the June 12, 2020, episode of WWE SmackDown, AJ Styles won his first Intercontinental Championship after defeating Daniel Bryan in a phenomenal match (pun fully intended). While continuing his gimmick of not giving any handouts, he successfully retained the Intercontinental Championship against Drew Gulak and Matt Riddle, two former Catch Point members who defeated Styles in non-title matches to earn those championship opportunities.

None of these championship matches occurred on PPV. Now that WWE SummerSlam 2020 is coming up in four weeks, this could end up being the first time Styles defends the championship on PPV. AJ Styles has a plenitude of options available to him on the road to the biggest event of the summer. Since Riddle is occupied with Corbin, Styles should mix it up with another superstar that he has a history with in the time being.

Henceforth, the following will identify and expatiate on three superstars who would be ideal IC Title contenders for Styles, starting with Shorty G.

3.) Shorty G

On the July 4, 2017, episode of WWE SmackDown, AJ Styles and Shorty G had a memorable match. Once AJ Styles was traded back to WWE SmackDown, Shorty G quickly announced on Twitter that he has been waiting for a rematch against Styles.

Now that Styles is the Intercontinental Champion, this would be the perfect opportunity for Shorty G to make a statement by defeating AJ Styles in a non-title match to set up an Intercontinental Championship match at WWE SummerSlam 2020.
