WWE: Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott Should Become The Next Tag Team Champions
By Mark Justice
Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott should dethrone Sasha Banks and Bayley to become the next Women’s Tag Team Champions.
On the July 16, 2019 episode of SmackDown, Liv Morgan lost to Charlotte Flair and cut a post-match promo to promise everyone that she will come back and ‘be real.’ This symbolized a repackaging of Morgan in WWE as a singles star, which meant an indirect breakup of the Riott Squad while Ruby Riott was injured.
When Morgan did return in December 2019, there was a series of promo packages that exemplified the evolution of her character. When she was a component of the Riott Squad, she sought affirmation from others and gave others all the power. She no longer seeks affirmation from others and she portrayed herself as anything but typical.
The blue tongue was gone and her true self arose. Many young teenagers could probably relate to this character as most of them go through phases in their life that indicate signs of maturity or self-growth. Thanks to her youth and relatable character, Morgan must have really resonated with this demographic.

However, on the December 31, 2019, episode of Monday Night Raw, her momentum hit rock bottom when her evolving character was intertwined with Rusev, Lana, and Bobby Lashley’s love storyline in what was a disastrous wedding. While WWE did attempt to regain Morgan’s momentum with victories over Lana, those victories lacked substance.
Coincidentally, as soon as Morgan was done feuding with Lana, Ruby Riott returned from injury and acted as if she was going to reunite with Morgan. Instead, she turned her back on Morgan instantly, eliciting shockwaves in the WWE Universe. Was the shock value worth it? In the short-term, it was not because Riott did not convert that heel turn into victories.
However, in the long term, there seems to have been some promise. In retrospect, while this heel turn for Riott did not result in positive momentum, it actually made sense why she did what she did once she explained herself on Raw Talk as well as the Kevin Owens show on this week’s Raw. She was merely afraid that Morgan did not need her anymore.
Indeed, after Morgan became her true self, she became independent and no longer sought affirmation from her former Riott Squad leader, Ruby Riott. She no longer gave Riott that power, and Riott was distraught at the idea of losing that power. Riott understood that she no longer has that power and is willing to accept that for the betterment of her friendship with Morgan.
Nonetheless, although her momentum did not go her way in the past few months, Morgan’s transformation is now complete. She is no longer portrayed as a sidekick to Ruby. Now, she is seen as her equal, and they are stronger together than apart, as can be substantiated by their victory against the IIconics on this week’s Raw.
When a team is stronger together than apart, the next step is tag team championship gold, which means that Bayley and Sasha Banks may have their hands full soon. While many were expecting Morgan and Riott to reunite at some point in 2020, many are also expecting Bayley and Sasha Banks to break up sooner rather than later.
Since the Riott Squad was always known for breaking friendships, they would be a key component in breaking up Banks and Bayley. In what would be a battle of friendships, this strengthened friendship should lead to tag team gold for Morgan and Riott while Banks and Bayley’s weakened friendship would continue their teased feud for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
