Bronson Reed defeated Johnny Gargano and Roderick Strong in a triple threat match to qualify for this ladder match. Damian Priest defeated Oney Lorcan and Ridge Holland in a triple threat match to qualify for this ladder match. Cameron Grimes defeated Kushida and Velveteen Dream in a triple threat match to qualify for this ladder match.

While Priest and Grimes have squandered their NXT North American Championship opportunities in the past, Reed has been booked as the next breakout star in the mid-card division on NXT. While a victory here would be huge for his career, it would be untimely to book him as the victor since his push has been eminently hasty and not booked gradually, as it should have been.

Johnny Gargano will defeat Ridge Holland in a second-chance match to qualify for this ladder match. He is a former NXT North American Champion and his experience is needed in this. There’s no NXT TakeOver without Johnny TakeOver, but he won’t win the championship since he does not need the victory and his main roster call-up is imminent.

Finn Balor will defeat Velveteen Dream in a second chance match to qualify for this ladder match. Balor has never won the NXT North American Championship and his purpose for returning to NXT has been forgotten. In order to reestablish his credibility, a championship victory would assure that he is still one of the big fish in a small pond with an assigned role to push the next shark.
