NXT TakeOver 31: Five things that must happen
Santos Escobar must retain the cruiserweight title
Santos Escobar and Isiah “Swerve” Scott are involved in perhaps the best build in NXT heading into this TakeOver. They have put on two strong matches in their series, coming into the PPV match with a split 1-1 record against each other. Now, the feud has a stronger backstory that includes Escobar’s turn into the leader of Legado del Fantasma. Scott and Escobar are expected to have a fantastic match, perhaps the best of the evening. This is an opportunity to establish both men as high-level performers.
Escobar is in need of a long term run with the title. He was brought into NXT and presented as a superstar signing, having him lose the cruiserweight title this quickly would not help that cause. Having him defeat Scott, especially if done clean, is a great way in helping build his aura in NXT. There are those that believe Escobar has the potential to be a main event title threat, much like Andrade or Neville, and that is very possible, especially if he picks up a big win on Sunday.
Scott is someone that has a lot of potential as well. However, he seems to be more “main roster” ready than many of the names that are currently featured on NXT each week. If he takes a loss on Sunday, fans should keep an eye out to see if he comes up in the WWE Draft. Imagine him putting on matches with the likes of Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and others on the main roster. Scott would deliver in those moments and that means he’d have to take the defeat at NXT TakeOver 31.
With the WWE Draft a few days away, there’s speculation that NXT will be involved. Will Legado del Fantasma be involved? The outcome of this match may play into that decision but keeping the title on Escobar is the right decision at this time.
