WWE: Vince McMahon doesn’t care if you don’t want Goldberg
Goldberg is one of the most polarizing part-timers in WWE, but Vince McMahon is intent on milking every bit of value out of his name brand.
Three years ago, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar had a WWE WrestleMania spectacle match for the ages to finish up what was an entertaining feud, albeit one that came at the cost of Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho battling it out for the Universal Title at the Show of Shows after having THE best rivalry on Raw that ‘Mania season.
Since then, Goldberg has fallen hard in the eyes of fans, with woeful matches in Saudi Arabia. Fans were enraged when he beat Bray Wyatt for the Universal Title, to the point where they didn’t care that he put over “Plan B” option Braun Strowman at WrestleMania 36.
On this past episode of SmackDown, Goldberg was in the Thunderdome to spectate the match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman.
And according to a report from Inside The Ropes, Vince McMahon wanted to use Goldberg to spike the ratings on SmackDown that week.
Vince McMahon thinks Goldberg still brings value to WWE
It didn’t work, seeing as how SmackDown’s rating dipped under two million. That’s not a strong season premier, especially since the priority is for WWE to maintain a high rating on SmackDown this Fall.
Furthermore, Inside The Ropes reports that Vince doesn’t care if anyone else disapproves of him using Goldberg on the show to boost ratings. He is adamant that there is “value” in using Goldberg.
Many fans would beg to differ, and it’s not like Goldberg had an appreciable effect on the rating. His run with Lesnar showed that he has something to offer, but it’s very specific. And the more Vince exposes Goldberg, who was never a great wrestler to begin with, the harder it is for fans to care about him.
Plus, with the way Goldberg beat Wyatt, he already has a huge negative mark against him from many wrestling fans. They did not take kindly to that result. Vince may see Goldberg as an attraction – and he certainly was – but that’s slowly become undone over the last couple of years.
