Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Nyla Rose (w/ Vickie Guerrero) – AEW World Women’s Championship
The hype video for this match was very good, highlighting the past between Nyla and Shida, making it look like a big time feud between the two. It’s too bad that the build on TV has been quite weak, because there is a really good story to tell here that could have added a lot more to the heat of this match. Nyla and Shida definitely put their all into it, and tried to make the most of what they had going in.
Shida had her leg attacked by Nyla throughout the match, and Shida’s selling was excellent. Shida hit a missile dropkick off the middle rope onto the ramp on Nyla, and then a second one from the top rope, but the knee was clearly giving Shida trouble. Nyla hit a lariat countering Shida’s running knee and hit a powerbomb before pulling Shida up at 1 and hitting a running knee.
Shida kicked out at one and made Nyla pay for the arrogance by countering a back body drop. Shida hit an avalanche falcon arrow off the top rope and pulled Nyla up to hit a running knee of her own. Vickie Guerrero grabbed Shida’s ankle, distracting her. Vickie grabbed the kendo stick but the ref took it from her. Shida threw Nyla into Vickie and then into the guardrail. Shida hit another falcon arrow, and then a running knee, but she could keep the pinfall due to the knee injury. Shida then hit 4 different knees to the back and head of Nyla for the pinfall, barely winning. Very solid match.
Result: Hirkaru Shida
Rating: *** (3 stars)
After the match, Vickie slapped Nyla Rose and Nyla walked away, looking defeated. We’re building to the eventual babyface turn of Nyla Rose, and I like it. This was a very easy way to set it up.
