When looking down the road, there’s always the possibility that someone who isn’t currently in the mix might find their way to it. Unlike the other two choices presented here, Io Shirai is not on SmackDown and isn’t even on the main roster.

Instead, Io Shirai is currently the reigning and defending NXT Women’s Champion. She’s deep in an impressive reign, hot off an unforgettable defense at NXT Halloween Havoc against Candice LeRae which included another unique entrance with Poppy, and is already gearing up for more challengers.

However, even Io Shirai can’t hold on to her title forever. That’s especially true when you consider the stiff competition building in the women’s division in WWE NXT. On top of longtime challengers like Candice LeRae and Dakota Kai, you’ve got former NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley putting her focus back on the title.

Tack on the returns of Toni Storm and Ember Moon, both former champions in their own right, and Io Shirai has an uphill battle to keep her title reign going. Should she lose the title, there may be no better trajectory than to have her target SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks.

These two have clashed in a one-on-one contest only once before, at NXT Great American Bash, and Io Shirai was victorious that night. Sasha Banks looks to be vanquishing old demons and is starting with Asuka at Survivor Series, but could that ultimately lead to another battle with “The Genius of The Sky” Io Shirai at WWE WrestleMania 37?
