WWE: The cruiserweight title should travel to all brands
The cruiserweight title is a belt that can be used to feature more talent across the WWE if it moved from brand to brand.
Remember the cruiserweight title? The belt was initially established through the excellent Cruiserweight Classic of 2016. The title has had some exceptional champions like Lio Rush, Buddy Murphy, Cedric Alexander, and PAC back when he was known as Neville. Where is it now? Around the waist of Santos Escobar. Escobar, a wrestler with the look and abilities to be a star for the WWE. How can they get there? By establishing the NXT cruiserweight title as a belt that travels from brand to brand.
It has been more than a month since Escobar has defended the cruiserweight belt. That moment came against Jake Atlas back in November. Since then, he has been competing alongside the other member of Legado del Fantasma in two and three-man tag matches. While they continue to deliver great matches, Santos deserves the opportunity to elevate himself as a singles star, while building the prestige of the title he holds. Both can be done by seeing him defend that title across all NXT, Monday Night Raw, and SmackDown.
Remember the excitement that came when Sasha Banks and Bayley were moving to new brands to defend the WWE women’s titles? Those types of moments can be built if Escobar shows up on the other shows with Joaquin Wilde and Raul Mendoza in tow. What would fans get to see? Escobar versus the likes of Ricochet, Mustafa Ali, or even Akira Tozawa on Raw. Title defenses against Daniel Bryan, Dominick Mysterio, or Chad Gable on SmackDown. All of these are the types of matches that should excite fans because Escobar would deliver, and we know the depths of under or misutilized talent on both shows. Moving the NXT cruiserweight title across brands gives WWE the opportunity to do something different at a time when fans call for it the most.
But what about 205 Live? This show is dedicated to the cruiserweight division and has good matches week-to-week. There is a space for that but perhaps expand on using it as a show to develop the mid to lower cards of all shows at once. This is especially important for the women’s division as they need more space to build up that portion of the roster. The women’s division in WWE is amazingly deep and making a shift to how 205 Live is used would help all parties involved.
Santos Escobar has all the makings of a star. His looks, character work, and abilities in the ring make him an example of a competitor that would be valuable to any organization. WWE started to build him in such a way, but that momentum has died. One way to bring it back would be to make his title available to all brands. Giving him time and more exposure would benefit everyone involved and create the opportunity to make shifts in other ways to help other parts of the roster also in need.
