WWE: The PG Era vs The Attitude Era – Who comes out on top?
Edge is the 2021 Royal Rumble Match winner, his second time winning the major event. He joins Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, HHH, Cena, Batista, and Randy Orton as multi-time winners. The question now is who will Edge compete against? Will it be Drew McIntyre, or will it be Roman Reigns?
The match that WWE should do is Edge Vs. Roman Reigns because it would be Reigns’ biggest challenge to date. When we look at the WWE roster, there aren’t many big-name babyfaces that Reigns could face. Edge would be the perfect babyface for Reigns to face because it would allow the fans to feel emotionally connected to the match because Edge returning back to the WWE and winning the title he never lost would be the perfect ending. Did Edge really need a second Rumble Win on his resume when WWE is filled with talented wrestlers who could have been put in that spot? Probably not, but it does help WWE push storylines that can last for a year.
Last week Reigns did an interview with Sports Illustrated where he talked about the beloved Attitude era of WWE.
“To be honest, and this is gonna make some good headlines, but it would’ve been too easy,” Reigns said. “I feel like [John] Cena said it before. It’s a challenge to be PG. It’s a challenge to not have to go the cheap route. It’s more challenging what we do now. It’s the facts. And that was all due to the work done before us to get us to this point, but at the same time, if we don’t do it the way we do it now, it wouldn’t be that way. It was a different time.”
WWE may not know, but this interview can help make some dream matches for Reigns come true.
Edge can call out Reigns for making the comments about the attitude era and talk about how he’s going to win the Universal title and stick up for the Era of professional wrestling that he came up in. This storyline can go so many ways because of the wrestlers that WWE still has on their roster from that Era. Reigns could beat Edge at Mania, then go after Goldberg, HHH, Big Show, Kane, Christian, and anyone else left from that Era of professional wrestling until next year when the Rock comes and defends his Era and challenges reigns to a match at Wrestlemania. The WWE has a storyline that could see Reign retire many of the wrestlers that we grew up loving, which would cause Reigns to become a more significant heel.
Reigns is currently having the best run of his career as the monster mob boss heel. If he were to cross paths with Edge, it would further cement him as the best wrestler in the WWE. Right now, Reigns is the heel WWE fans always knew he could be. Edge coming to Smackdown and dethroning Reigns would make many fans happy because of everything that Edge has gone through, but if I were with the WWE, I would use this match to help build towards The Rock and Reigns. The PG era vs. Attitude Era storyline needs to be told, and this is how it should be done.
