Legendary Professional Wrestler Butch Reed Passes Away
Bruce “Butch” Reed has been a staple of professional wrestling for decades. From Mid-South Wrestling to NWA, WCW, and WWE, Butch Reed has made a name for himself wherever he went and cemented his legacy as one of the most known African-American wrestlers of all time.
On Feb. 5, Reed passed away at the age of 66 due to heart complications. Reed’s passing was announced on his Instagram page with the following statement:
“To everyone who reached out god bless you. Today we lost a great man. Due to heart complications, Bruce ‘Butch’ Reed passed away. Butch is in heaven now with the wrestling gods. I am sure he is already booked for a Heavyweight Championship match. Once again thank you for all the prayers. We will keep this page going in his memory. The wrestling world lost a legendary figure on Feb. 5, as “The Natural” Butch Reed passed away. He enjoyed a lengthy career across multiple promotions.
Another thing to note is the post prior to this announcement stated that Reed had two heart attacks this year.
The wrestling world has shared its thoughts, memories, and tributes to the legend. John Layfield shared his first memory meeting Butch Reed over 30 years ago. Others such as Ric Flair, Lance Storm, Tommy Dreamer, Missy Hyatt, Hurricane Helms, and Matt Cardona had similar stories to share ranging from when they meet him, or how much of a fan they were of Reed.
Some of Reed’s career highlights included his feud with Ted DiBiase and “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan that attracted fans to root for Butch Reed. He is also most notable for being in a tag team with Ron Simmons in the late 1980s named Doom as they were both managed by Nancy Benoit followed by Teddy Long. The team went on to win the WCW Tag Team Championship.
Speaking of championships, Butch Reed also held the NWA International Heavyweight Championship when he wrestled at Championship Wrestling from Florida and the Mid-South Tag Team, Television, and North American Heavyweight Championships. With all of the success and charisma Reed had in professional wrestling and in football in college, and in the NFL, Reed will be remembered forever as one of the best and strongest wrestlers that have graced the earth.
