AEW and Impact partnership: Too safe and no risk
By J.C.
The partnership between AEW and Impact Wrestling shook the wrestling world when it was first announced in late 2020. Wrestling fans immediately compiled wish lists of dream matches between wrestlers of the two opposing companies with the hope that it would become reality.
This shift with AEW and Impact was initially exciting for fans because fans wanted to see the world of wrestling become bigger. There have been many attempts over the years with various companies who tried to make it happen, but it never worked out. The partnership between two different companies that appear on television on a weekly basis so far has fallen short of expectations.
AEW and Impact have a chance to take risks and create new moments for fans.
These wrestling companies are two quite different worlds that could collide and add to the programming for each respective show. It would not even interfere with the primary stories Instead, it would add variety.
With a wide range of superstars and different storylines, it could be the perfect storm for a crossover. It would not even have to be major moments, just interaction with different wrestlers to plant some seeds for the future.
So far, however, Impact has only seen Kenny Omega and Private Party come over from AEW. It was extremely easy to forget about the partnership until it was time for the Good Brothers match or segment.
When watching Impact Wrestling, it feels too safe and bare minimum with only The Good Brothers and Kenny Omega. The Impact World Champion does not even interact with the atmosphere of the Impact Zone. The same can be said about the Good Brothers when they crossover to AEW.
When watching Impact Wrestling, nothing has really changed much with the programming besides Omega appearing, which makes him stick out like a sore thumb. The fact Omega hasn’t interacted with the world of Impact, and the rest of the AEW roster staying away makes it feel like it isn’t a true crossover.
Impact Wrestling has a unique world filled with personalities, from Rosemary’s world to Swinger’s Palace. It is enough to chip away at Scott D’Amore’s sanity little by little every week (if he hasn’t lost it already).
Imagine an AEW superstar stepping into that atmosphere and having to adjust to it. Darby Allin finding like-minded chaotic darkness in Decay, Leva Bates visiting Swinger’s Palace, or The Acclaimed getting themselves in trouble. The possibilities are endless for what AEW stars could run into when they enter the Impact Zone.
The fun does not have to end there: Why not have more Impact wrestlers show up on AEW shows? For example, Impact has arguably the most stacked women’s division in wrestling, and bringing in names such as Knockouts Champion Deonna Purrazzo, Jordynne Grace, Rosemary, and Tenille Dashwood could further bolster a growing AEW women’s division.
Bringing a piece of the Impact Zone to AEW may also be beneficial to disrupt the somewhat smooth scheduled programming flow. The only Impact stars to appear thus far have been the Good Brothers and it was primarily to be part of the Elite storyline.
The partnership has been predictable for who will appear where and it doesn’t benefit Impact Wrestling at all. Having a variety of superstars crossover would be a great way to keep fans guessing as to who could appear from the Impact Zone next (and vice versa).
Having more talent take part in the crossover would draw even more fans to watch the company’s shows, making this more of a win-win situation. This is the only way the partnership will feel more even.
So many fans have a sour taste in their mouths when it comes to Impact Wrestling because they remember a different, more chaotic time in the company’s history. This partnership could drive people back who may not normally watch Impact but may be curious because of a particular wrestler’s appearance on AEW.
Hopefully, the partnership will finally give fans new moments, unpredictability, and a true crossover between the two companies. It will be great leverage to push both promotions forward and solidify the new era of wrestling.
The recent developments on Impact Wrestling, with the company’s top stars now pursuing Omega and the Impact World Title, will hopefully bust the forbidden door wide open and cause a floodgate of possibilities on both shows in the coming months. Hopefully then fans can truly say it’s a partnership that’s even and a great crossover between the two companies.
