Dr. Britt Baker

So, let’s start with the easy one.

Hikaru Shida has had a long title run and has carried the AEW women’s division for almost a year while the division was ravaged by injuries, travel restrictions, and inconsistency.

But the time has come for a new face of the women’s division.

Britt Baker was one of the first people signed to AEW. And she was signed with the thought that she would be one of the main attractions of the division.

But her run in AEW got off to a bit of a rocky start. She never found her niche as a babyface. Her personality wasn’t one that evoked emotions from the AEW fanbase and her matches were average at best.

Then came her leg injury. Surely the little bit of momentum she might have had was going to be completely wiped away as she would be forced to spend away from the ring.

But Baker would not be denied. She took the time that she was unable to compete and worked on developing her character. She did a full turn from face to heel and really became in tune with how to get under the fan’s skin and elicit reactions.

In true heel fashion, Baker was also given a sidekick to help her get out of tough spots and win matches that she maybe otherwise wouldn’t have. This in turn led to her generating even more heat with the fans.

The new persona that Baker is displaying is great on the microphone, but even more importantly, it has helped her gain the confidence that she seemed to be lacking as a face in the ring. Baker is now entering the ring like she owns it and was putting on really good matches.

On May 30, Britt Baker will challenge Hikaru Shida for the AEW Women’s World Championship. It has been a long road for the good doctor, but one that was necessary for her development to become the most interesting and emotion-evoking woman on the roster.

And the best thing for fans of AEW is that Baker may not have even peaked yet. If you think she is a smug, egotistical woman now, just wait until she has gold around her waist.  The best Britt Baker may indeed, be yet to come.
