Wrestling Rumour Roundup: John Cena’s return change, WWE Raw ratings and more
By Amit Shukla
Sometimes talking about pro wrestling rumors is as fun as watching the matches in the ring.
WWE and wrestling, in general, are filled with news and rumors as a lot of information is not available when the fans want it the most. Every week it seems like there are new speculations within the WWE and other promotions in the industry. Let’s take a look at some of the rumors that were discussed this week.
WWE trying to merge business divisions
It looks like WWE has had their fair share of problems during 2020, which led them to release a lot of superstars and backstage officials. The trend continued this year, and on the fateful date of 15th April, various superstars saw their WWE contracts end abruptly.
The news coming out is that WWE is trying to merge business divisions. It may be shocking, but it seems like Vince and Co. are on a cost-saving spree, and so they are letting anyone be off the company that hasn’t yielded fruits for them in the past few months. The big question remains that does it put other’s career in jeopardy, or are others on the brink of losing their job. [H/T: PWInsider]
Is Eva-Lution returning to wrestling?
Eva Marie didn’t make it big during her previous run, and the female division has jumped leaps and bounds since All Red Everything was on WWE Television. Vignettes have started airing where Eva Marie is referred to as an Eva-Lution but is it something that will change the wrestling business, or is it another hype package with no substance. There were rumors that Eva would return to manage a WWE superstar, but the name of the WWE superstar was unannounced as of our previous rumors piece.
A new piece of information has emerged, and it states that Eva Marie would work as a babyface. She will be working between the ropes as a wrestler and will not manage another superstar. It means we may see some fun segments, or will it be a new Eva that has worked in the dark to let her efforts come to light when she debuts in front of the WWE Universe. There is no official word on her return date, but we should expect her sooner than later. Will the WWE try to check on the response she receives during the virtual fan base at the Thunderdome, or will they try to tempt luck and bring her back when fans are in attendance? Will John Cena be at SummerSlam or are the plans nixed?
John Cena’s shooting for HBO Max’s series Peacemaker would be over by the 7th of July, giving him enough time to prepare, rejuvenate and return to a WWE ring. John last appeared in a WWE ring at WrestleMania 36 during the Firefly Funhouse Match with Bray Wyatt and has maintained a distance from wrestling due to his Hollywood commitments.
The word going around at this time confirms that a program for John Cena is in the works, but will it come to fruition? Cena has the power of the Cenation by his side, and his presence can change everything for the WWE.
WWE is currently struggling with ratings, but is it the end of the road or the block for the company, and will things turn in their favor? It’s a risk at this time, and there is no concrete answer for it. John Cena is shooting a movie, and if there is any change in the plan due to unforeseen circumstances, then the company should always keep a Plan B in place.
John Cena is all about Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect, but it’s not a sure thing at this point that he will be available for the show. If he is, then it is a win-win situation for the wrestling juggernaut, but you can never say never. [H/T: PWInsider]
The Raw Mayhem Continues
WWE’s flagship show has seen a downfall in match quality and storytelling in the previous weeks. This downfall has resulted in a dive for Raw’s ratings as WWE’s longest-running weekly program on Monday Nights recorded the lowest for the show in 2021 last week. Fans are annoyed that they have to witness the same matches week in and out, and some others don’t get the opportunity.
On the other hand, some performers are getting championship matches regularly while others have to wait in line for a moment to shine. While these are recurring issues with Raw, another concern that is a regular for the WWE creative team is to re-write the show at the last minute due to a sudden change.
It gives them less time to recreate the entire situation and also impacts a superstar’s performance on the mic and between the ropes. The word coming out is that Raw saw a change almost 30 to 45 minutes before they went on air. It explains why the show did poorly last week and why the fans have disregarded the show. It’s about time for WWE leadership to introspect, in retrospect to, the current turn of events on the writing and rating side of things and outdo themselves. [H/T: PWInsider]
