AEW: Is it time to put the Tag Team Championships on the Best Friends?
If there’s one aspect of AEW’s game that has made it stand out from its competitors, that would be their stacked tag team division. It’s honestly unfair.
The list is pure insanity. The Young Bucks. FTR. Santana and Ortiz. Lucha Bros. The Acclaimed. Varsity Blonds. And that just the beginning of an incredibly deep roster. But a tag team that has stood out since basically day one are the Best Friends.
Chuck Taylor and Trent? have been one of the top teams in AEW for a long time, not to mention an absolute fan favorite. But their title matches have been few and far between, making fans wonder when their time at the top will come. And it should be sooner rather than later.
Best Friends sign on the dotted line
Well known on the indie scene, Chuck Taylor and Trent? have worked for companies like Chikara, PWG, ROH, TNA, and NJPW. Trent? actually worked for WWE from 2007 to 2013 on a number of internal brands, though it wasn’t a particularly memorable run.
The two of them starting tagging together in PWG in 2013. From there, they would go on to ROH in 2017 where they worked with Rocky Romero to defeat The Young Bucks and Adam Page. On top of that, the duo also worked with NJPW before signing with AEW in 2019.
Reputedly, Trent? was the most difficult to convince to sign as he didn’t want to be tied down to one company. That mentality might have something to do with his experiences in WWE. If that’s the case, it’s hard to blame him.
But Trent? and “The Kentucky Gentleman” Chuck Taylor did end up making the jump, and it has certainly paid off for everyone involved. That includes Best Friends, AEW, and the fans as they’ve been treated to some superb matches.
Their AEW run
For the most part, Best Friends have had a great run in AEW. The only real issue was an injury that kept Trent? out of action for several months. But Chuck continued working with Orange Cassidy which kept the team in the spotlight.
Having Orange Cassidy at their sides has only enhanced their gimmick, and the recent addition of Kris Statlander more so. All four members of the faction work well together. Fans are responding to them, both to their comedy chops as well as their in-ring skills.
While they’re known for their antics, the core Best Friends duo is also a highly respected team. Prior to Trent? being injured, Best Friends had a five-star Parking Lot Fight with Santana and Ortiz. It was both epic and brutal, a match people are still talking about months later.
Every match they’re in might not get five-star’s from Dave Meltzer, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are one of the most consistent, entertaining, and reliable tag teams in the business. As such, one has to wonder when their time is coming.
The Next AEW World Tag Team Champions
During the short history of AEW, there have been four teams to hold the titles. Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky were the inaugural champs followed by Kenny Omega and Adam Page then FTR. The current title holders are The Young Bucks, who won the titles at Full Gear in November 2020.
At this point, their time as the champs is coming to a close. Fans can feel it in the air, and there are a number of potential teams who could do it. But Best Friends should be the ones to step up and take the gold. They are one of the best tag teams in wrestling and are over with the fans.
It’s also safe to say that they would have been champs by now were it not for the pandemic and the injury. Omega and Page’s reign was a lot longer than it would have been under normal circumstances. And Best Friends may have been the ones to defeat them had things been normal.
The time of the Best Friends has arrived. They have proven themselves to be a great, reliable team. And the fans want to see gold around the waists of Trent? and Chuck Taylor. It’s time someone toppled The Young Bucks, and the smart money should be on Best Friends.
