NXT TakeOver: top five matches in the event’s history
1. #DIY vs The Revival (NXT TakeOver: Toronto)
I might be biased with this match because I was in attendance where this match happened. But not only do I believe that this is the best match in NXT history, but this is also one of the best matches in WWE history.
The Revival dominated the match until Ciampa tagged in Gargano. He went off, hitting Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder at the same time. Gargano was about to do the slingshot spear, but Dawson caught him and he and Wilder turned it into the Shatter Machine. That gave the Revival the first fall.
Wilder sat Gargano on the top rope and tried to backdrop him, but Gargano reversed it to a crossbody. He only got a two-count. So, Gargano tried to tag Ciampa in. After the initial interruption from Dawson, Gargano finally got to his partner. Ciampa was a house of fire. He hit Dawson with his signature knee strike, but he only got a two-count. #DIY then hit their Super Kick and knee strike combination and that got them the second fall and knotted things at 1-1.
Ten minutes after the second fall, Wilder grabbed a tag team belt and gave it to Dawson. As soon as Gargano went for a kick, Dawson blocked it with the belt shot, and that aggravated Gargano’s injured knee. The Revival worked on Gargano’s knee for the rest of the match. Dawson put pressure on the injured knee by putting in the inverted figure four leg lock. However, Gargano managed to reach the top rope.
The Revival was about to finish off Gargano with #DIY’s own finisher, but at the last second, Gargano rolled out and Wilder accidentally hit Dawson with a superkick. #DIY then hit the Shatter Machine to Wilder. A few minutes later, Gargano puts on the Garga-No-Escape to Wilder. Dawson was about to break the submission until Ciampa put him in the Armbar Bridge. They won the third fall by making the Revival tap out, thus making #DIY the tag team champs.
This match did not get too crazy. We didn’t see any table spots or big moves that only got them a two count. And that’s why I love this match. It’s the Revival using their skills to win and it’s about #DIY using their determination to achieve the same goal.
The Revival played the perfect foils to #DIY because they were beating them up and always had the advantage. The fans wanted #DIY to win so badly, and they knew that. So, they did everything to make #DIY look good. #DIY adapted to the way that the Revival work, and that’s why this is great. When DIY finally won, it was worth the wait because of the way that everyone involved wrestled in this match.
