WWE NXT Results: Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher win
WWE NXT was set for another night of action, but the big news of the night was whether William Regal was walking away from his position after seven years as the General Manager of the yellow and black brand.
The night opened with Regal walking down to the ring and giving a heartfelt thought about his place in the NXT family. Before he was able to fully announce stepping down, Karrion Kross interrupted him. Kross berated him until Samoa Joe appeared. Regal asked Joe to take the GM position off his shoulders and Joe did not accept the request.
Imperium was out to the ring for tag team action against Breezango.
Tyler Breeze and Marcel Barthel started things off. Breeze was the smaller man and felt all the power that Barthel had to offer. He was able to make the tag to Fandango, while Fabian Aichner was tagged in as well to keep his team in control. Fandango was able to turn things around for a moment, with chops out of the corner and a leg drop counter.
Fandango found himself basically fighting off both men until Breeze made a move outside against Barthel. Fandango was doing a great job until he was grounded and isolated on the wrong side of the ring. Fandango was able to make the tag to Breeze who came in and snuck out a pinfall. But they both ended up getting assaulted for their trouble.
Breezango defeated Imperium via pinfall.
Kushida was out for the open challenge up next with his NXT Cruiserweight title on the line. Trey Baxter answered the call.
Kushida attacked Baxter’s legs early, taking him to the ground for a big dose of grappling. Baxter was able to pick up the pace against Kushida, staying one step in front of the champion. Kushida was tied up in the ropes and Baxter kicked him in the knees. Kushida fell to the outside and Baxter followed up with a dive over the top.
Baxter and Kushida were back in the ring where the champion continued to struggle with the challenger. That was until he landed a big palm strike and a basement dropkick. Baxter fought back with a Spanish Fly then a Springboard 450, but Kushida kicked out of the pinfall. They went to the top where Kushida was able to isolate Baxter’s arm before rolling into the Hoverboard Lock to get the win.
Kushida defeats Trey Baxter via submission to retain the NXT Cruiserweight title.
Ted DiBiase was out next for the coronation service for LA Knight.
Knight had a lot of glowing praise for DiBiase and vice versa, leading to fireworks when the title was placed on his shoulder. He then assaulted DiBiase to the surprise of everyone watching. Cameron Grimes ran out to make the save, stopping Knight from beating on the down man longer.
Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai had tag team action next against Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter.
Carter and Kai started things of, but it did not take long until Catanzaro and Carter were hitting tag team moves. Kai was scrambling but found a way to get to Gonzalez who immediately started to dominate. But Carter and Catanzaro were able to out quick her and frustrate the champion.
All that offense came to a halt when Gonzalez was back in the ring against Carter, stretching her across the knee. Kai continued the offense with a stiff kick in the corner. They kept up the quick tags to keep Catanzaro isolated on their side of the ring. Carter was finally able to tag in and get in some offense on both women. Gonzalez planted Carter with a Sidewalk Slam, then tagged back in to Kai.
Carter and Catanzaro continued the fast-paced offense, eventually knocking Gonzalez from the ring. Carter set up Kai to land a 450 into a neck breaker combo but Gonzalez made the save. Kai had enough of an opportunity to hit the GTK on Catanzaro, pinning her for the win.
Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez defeated Kayden Carter and Kacy Catanzaro via pinfall.
The main event of the evening was a tornado tag team match. Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa took on Grizzled Young Veterans.
The fight started before GYV was in the ring with fists thrown on the stage ramp. Thatcher and Ciampa took turns beating on both members of GYV, then transitioning to submissions that were eventually broken. Ciampa was rolling until GYV put on some tag team offense, dropping him then laying out Thatcher with a big kick to the face.
Thatcher and Ciampa continued to struggle with GYV and their coordinated offense. Ciampa was able to pick up steam with clotheslines and knees. He continued to rampage on both men outside the ring. Thatcher joined in on the action, with both men having a stampede of clotheslines in the corner.
Thatcher was in trouble as Drake locked in a Kogi Clutch while Gibson stomped away on him until Ciampa made the save. A miscommunication led to Ciampa laying Thatcher out with a big boot. Ciampa was able to land an avalanche Air Raid Crash, but Drake kicked out of the pinfall. GYV would decimate Ciampa with a Doomsday Device from the ring to the outside.
Thatcher and Gibson exchanged stiff shots inside the ring. Just as Thatcher attempted to lock in a Double Wrist Lock, Drake came in with a high kick, leading to an elevated Backstabber, but Ciampa made the save. GYV would isolate Ciampa outside the ring, but Ciampa countered, hitting an Air Raid Crash on the announce table. They locked in an ankle lock and armbar combo on Drake, forcing him to submit and taking the victory.
