Stunning news hit the wrestling community as WWE announced the release of Bray Wyatt Saturday afternoon. The man known as The Fiend is no longer a part of the promotion as they wished him the best in his future endeavors.

“WWE has come to terms on the release of Bray Wyatt. We wish him the best in all his future endeavors,” WWE posted to Twitter on Saturday.

Additional news of the release broke later in the day. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer reported that the release was explained to Wyatt to be linked to budget cuts and that he was expecting to return to television in August. This comes after another strong performing quarter for the WWE, as stated during the financial call on Thursday of that same week.

WrestleMania 37 was the last time that wrestling fans saw Wyatt in the ring. He was defeated by Randy Orton on Night Two of WrestleMania in an opening match that resulted in widespread disdain for the angle. Alexa Bliss played a central role in his defeat and has taken on a Fiend-like character ever since.

During his decade-long run with the WWE, Wyatt played some interesting characters along the way. Many will remember his introduction as part of Nexus, a group that had a lot of people excited but fell short of overall expectations in the end. Then the Wyatt Family performed very well for much of their run but were never booked as the main event stable they could have been. Lastly, The Fiend’s introduction in 2019 drew a lot of attention, but rushed and nonsensical booking destroyed any momentum.

Bray Wyatt has yet to comment on the release in any fashion.
