Fantasy Booking: What if Cruiserweights had their own wrestling promotion?
I think the US is overdue for a promotion that only focuses on cruiserweights. Cruiserweights were the only reason anyone stuck with WCW till the end. Cruiserweights are the leading cause of audiences yelling “that was awesome.”
No company has truly zoned in on the middleweight and lightweight division. Usually, they are jammed into the midcard or given a small spin-off show called like 205 Live. No wrestling promotion would ever stack their roster with high flyers without throwing in a few heavy lifters and beefcakes.
What would a Cruiserweight Wrestling Promotion look like?
Owners:
If AEW taught me anything, it is the only way to earn your right at Madison Square Garden is to connect a major wrestler with a major millionaire who loves sports. Cody Rhodes and Tony Khan achieved the impossible when they were able to prove that WWE was not the only sport that could fill mega arenas.
The only person who could give legitimacy to a cruiserweight-focused wrestling show would be Rey Misterio Jr. Any other wrestler to head the company would drive it to obscure status. Since the WWE would never give up Rey without a fight, we would probably have to stick with the next best icon, Chavo Guerrero Jr, as the owner.
Chavo or Rey aren’t millionaires so they would need to work with a media mogul. I can think of no better platform than Netflix. Netflix is overdue for an exclusive wrestling show (they used to play Lucha Underground reruns but that was it). It would be in their wheelhouse because they already draw fans with Ultimate Beastmaster and The Floor is Lava sports programming.
The Feel:
The second most important question is: What will Cruiserweights wrestling feel like? The WWE is geared toward tweens and teens with TikTok accounts, while AEW is run like a frat party at a major Ivy League school. The two companies couldn’t be the more polar opposite. I can’t see Chavo advertising to the tween crowd, but I don’t think Netflix would want to resurrect ECW in all its rated-R glory. Wrestling works best at a PG-14 rating.
A focus on international cruiserweights would be perfect. AAA Lucha Libre is the closest promotion to an all cruiserweight program, but their roster is 90% Latin American. This program would highlight the high flyers from the UK, US, Japan, and Mexico.
The Talent:
The wrestling world is brimming with talent from all over the world. Here’s just a small sample of middleweight and lightweight wrestlers that would give the show legitimacy. I realize a lot of these wrestlers have contracts in other companies, but I can dream.
Mexico: Octagon Jr, Laredo Kid, Sexy Star, Lady Apache, La Flamita, La Toxicas, Kommander, Toxin, Villano III Jr
Canada & America: Shark Boy, DJZ, The Amazing Red, Petey Williams, Sonjay Dutt, Jake Crist, TJP
UK: Noam Dar, Angel Hayze, Valkyrie, Isla Dawn, Kasey, Leyton Buzzard, Kenny Williams, Stevie Boy, Mandrew
Japan: Tetsuya Endo, Miyu Yamashita, Rika Tatsumi, Yuki Ueno, MAO, Dragon Dia, Jason Lee, HARASHIMA
Legends and Managers: X-Pac, Billy Kidman, Jushin Thunder Liger, Hurricane Helms, Taka Michinoku, Toshie Uematsu, Yoshihiro Tajiri
The Titles:
World Cruiserweight (Title Men’s and Women’s): This is not some filler title for featherweight mid-carders. This is the highest honor you can receive in the company.
The International Title: Wrestlers who competed for this would be representing their country. This would spark a lot of nationalism between Mexico, Japan, the UK, and the US.
Tag Team Titles: 4 or 6 man titles for men and women
Extreme Title: A title that has a no DQ stipulation and prefers to involve weapons and ladders. This title will lead others to yell “Holy sh…”

Why hasn’t this been pitched yet? I think there is a lot of potential here. Netflix, I am here if you need the inspiration
