Top 3 Moments From SummerSlam
By Dylan Hebert
SummerSlam took place on August 21, 2021, from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. There was a handful of moments that took place at “The Biggest Party of the Summer” so I decided to handpicked three of them that really stood out from the others.
3) Bobby Lashley Beats Goldberg; Retains WWE Championship
Nobody predicted this. In recent memory, every single time Goldberg makes a sudden return to the WWE, he’s randomly awarded a title shot and even worse, winning the title that he has the opportunity of attempting to win. While Bobby Lashley is the most dominant WWE Champion that the company has had in a while, it was no doubt that Goldberg was the heavy favorite to win. After MVP hit Goldberg in the knee with his cane while the ref had his back turned, it caused an injury to Goldberg was unable to put any pressure on his leg. Bobby Lashley repeatedly ran Goldberg’s knee into the ring post and it eventually forced the referee to stop the match, thus having Bobby Lashley retain the WWE Championship in shocking fashion.
After the match concluded, Bobby Lashley repeatedly struck Goldberg’s knee with a steel chair causing his son Gage to jump on Lashley’s back but ended with Lashley putting him in his signature Hurt Lock submission. Because of that, this Lashley/Goldberg rivalry is far from over.
2) Becky Lynch Returns; Wins SmackDown Women’s Title In 26 Seconds
Going into the SummerSlam PPV, the advertised match was Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. A ton of backstage buzz revealed that Banks was unable to compete, putting the must-see matchup in jeopardy.
Ring announcer Greg Hamilton made the announcement and also announced Carmella as the replacement to face Belair, thus taking the energy out of the fanbase in the stadium. Right after Belair accepted Carmella’s challenge, the entrance music of a returning Becky Lynch hit and the WWE universe erupted. She attacked Carmella and tossed her out of the ring shortly after. After returning to the inside of the ring, Lynch proposed The “EST” vs. “The Man” for the Smackdown Women’s Championship where Belair had no hesitation to accept it. Although the match was listed at 26 seconds long, it took a matter of 5 seconds for Lynch to hit one move on Belair to earn a shocking victory to win the championship.
My thoughts on this one are very mixed. Am I happy to see Becky back? Of course. She’s been out of action for over a year because of her pregnancy with fellow WWE Superstar Seth Rollins. Do I agree with a ‘Squash Match‘ to bury a rising star in Bianca Belair? Absolutely not. A horrible look for WWE. Fans have so many questions as to where WWE will give us no answers. Hopefully, Belair can find a way to stay in the title picture.
1) Brock Lesnar Returns To WWE
After Roman Reigns halted John Cena’s hopes of becoming a record-breaking 17-time World Champion, Brock Lesnar made his return to WWE. Lesnar’s last appearance in WWE was when he was defeated by Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 36 for his WWE Championship. After that, Brock Lesnar was never seen on WWE television again and let his contract expire in September 2020. Lesnar made his shocking return to WWE while sporting a new look of a full beard and even a ponytail. While I can’t see Brock keeping this look very long, it definitely wouldn’t surprise me if he decided to do so. Once SummerSlam concluded and the cameras went off air, Brock Lesnar went back to an old habit and hit John Cena with an F-5 and even multiple suplexes.
Lesnar’s former manager Paul Heyman has now aligned himself with current Universal Champion Roman Reigns so this could definitely make for a must-see storyline.
