Top 10 AEW Debuts
5. Malakai Black
Talk about dark and scary characters working on national TV. Take notes, Lily.
When we talk about WWE wrestlers who are misused, Aleister Black is one of the……
Actually, let’s be honest. That term has been used so many times for so many wrestlers, seems like every wrestler is being underutilized these days. WWE is not making their fans happy.
However, everyone seems to agree that Aleister Black should’ve worked in WWE. He’s big, he’s got scary tattoos, he’s a great worker with all that MMA style offense, and his character is cool enough to be actually scary and not funny. He could’ve been the second coming of The Undertaker.
His NXT run was awesome and then he got called up to the main roster and got stuck behind a door. But then he did have some awesome matches with Cesaro and Buddy Murphy and more importantly, he was undefeated. But then he got involved with Seth Rollins and lost his eye and got lost in the shuffle. He was no longer this unbeatable monster, he was just another guy. His Dark Father gimmick showed some promise but he was bafflingly released right at the beginning of his angle with Big E. Talk about disappointments.
However, no one expected what came next.
I’d say the debut of Malakai Black was the most surprising of all of the AEW debuts because no one was prepared for it. Somehow, his 90-day non-compete clause was actually a 30-day non-compete clause, and there he was, in full black, kicking Arn Anderson and Cody Rhodes in the face.
And since then, there’s been no looking back.
Malakai Black is like the devil, relentlessly going after every member of the Nightmare Family. He has a scar on his right eye that seems to fester and grow like a virus, it’s a reminder of what he went through and where he came from.
He doesn’t just beat his opponents, he dismantles and destroys them. Everything from his entrance to his gear, to his music, to his matches, everything he does is in service of his character.
In his very first match, he demolished Cody Rhodes, pinned him with a boot on his chest, and almost forced him to retire. He’s broken the Nightmare Family, Dustin Rhodes, Brock Anderson, Lee Johnson, Cody, Arn. No one is safe from Malakai.
As it stands right now, Malakai Black is one of the most over characters in AEW and he’s just getting started.
Who knows what’ll happen when his scar grows bigger in size and Tommy End seemingly loses more control to the devil or the demon Malakai, who Malakai goes after next, and what victims are next in line to lose their souls. Well, fans are going to be there for all of it.
