Johnny Gargano is officially a free agent.

After his storied WWE NXT run came to an end with Tuesday’s sendoff, many wondered what would be next for the first NXT Triple Crown Champion. Fightful Select broke news on Thursday that not only is Gargano a free agent, but he is free to work anywhere that he pleases. The big news is that he does not have a non-compete clause attached to it and he could appear on any television program of his choice immediately.

According to the Fightful Select report, WWE made attempts to sign Gargano to a new deal, but he instead chose to go the route of free agency.

Another interesting point within the news piece is that’s in 2019 multiple top NXT stars elected to pass on new deals because there “was not sufficient incentive for top starts to take the deal.” This comes soon after another big name in NXT’s history, Adam Cole, left WWE under similar circumstances and moved over to AEW in September. Kyle O’Reilly is another individual whose contract status and next steps are unknown in the same fashion.

A large vocal contingent of fans is pushing for Gargano to head to All Elite Wrestling. This banner has seen an influx of former WWE performers, but many of those individuals are experiencing a career refresh. Bryan Danielson is on one of the best runs of his career. Ruby Soho is getting more positive television time than seen during her main roster run in WWE. Even 2point0 are in a situation where their strengths are highlighted alongside Daniel Garcia.
