Kyle O’Reilly in AEW creates multiple branching storylines of interest
Wednesday’s edition of AEW Dynamite featured a big moment as Kyle O’Reilly made his debut for the promotion. Standing next to Adam Cole and Bobby Fish showed flashbacks of The Undisputed Era, but also let the world know that one of the best tag teams in the business, reDRagon is back together. This moment helps set up a massive storyline for AEW in the future.
O’Reilly stood next to Cole and Fish after cleaning house of the members of Best Friends. But the palpable animosity came when The Young Bucks walked down to the ring.
The Bucks and reDRagon have a long history together. Their rivalry could be called the “Celtics vs Lakers” of tag team wrestling in this generation. They’ve traded the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships and the Ring of Honor Tag Team Championships several times. It’s clear there’s no love loss between these two groups and fans should hope that they get to compete against each other in AEW soon.
But that’s not the end of the matter. Cole and O’Reilly were locked in a heated feud before they both left the WWE months apart. The two men didn’t embrace or even shake hands. AEW does an excellent job playing off those types of moments to tell a long-term story and there’s certainly one to tell here.
At the center of all this is Adam Cole. Where does he go? Does he stick with the Super Kliq and remain Elite? Or does he rock with the duo that’s helped him reach the most recent about of success in Fish and O’Reilly? These are interesting wrinkles that immediately makes this one of the more intriguing angles through all All Elite Wrestling.
And still, the angle doesn’t end there. What does this mean for Kenny Omega’s eventual return? When he does return everything will be in shambles compared to how he left it. Cole versus Omega was already being hinted at and now there’s even more reason to look forward to the standoff between the two men. This is an opportunity to turn Omega and The Bucks into massive babyfaces for the company once again.
Or they could form a supergroup that would rival even The Bullet Club or the NWO. All these possibilities create a space in storytelling that makes professional wrestling an exciting form of entertainment.
Kyle O’Reilly was yet another big get for AEW. His emergence creates an opening for many branching storylines that can be central to AEW’s continued momentum throughout 2022.
