The New Year is off to a roaring start across professional wrestling, for better or for worse. Brock Lesnar is now the WWE Champion coming out of WWE Day 1 and there are mounds of questions for what is next. Long-term booking hasn’t been a strength for the WWE in years, so there’s no telling what is coming next. But the wrestling viewership is screaming at the top of their lungs that Bobby Lashley must be the next challenger for Lesnar.

Lashley versus Lesnar is a match that fans have wanted to see for years. Both men have returned to the WWE for what may be the best runs in their careers. When it was announced that Roman Reigns was forced out of his match with Lesnar and Lesnar was added to the WWE title match, fans immediately focused on the fact that this is the first time both men have shared a ring together. The moment was there and WWE gave viewers just enough to make them want more.

Going back to Roman versus Lesnar is not want fans want to see. WWE consistently leans on the same stars and ideas. The effectiveness of doing so has long dissipated and it shows in the ratings and digital metrics tried to the platform. It’s time to do something different and booking a strong feud between Lashley and Lesnar is the exact solution.

WWE has long believed in hoss battles as eye-catching attractions and it doesn’t get much bigger than Lashley versus Lesnar. Everything about their backgrounds is similar but slightly different enough to spark interest. Lesnar fought in UFC. Lashley fought in that company’s main competition, Strikeforce and Bellator. Lesnar is an NCAA Champion. Lashley is a three-time NAIA Champion. There’s a wealth of experience to play with to tell a story.

Plus, add in MVP and Paul Heyman to the equation and the value continues to skyrocket. Those men are two of the best talkers in the industry and can immediately sell this as a big fight without Lashley and Lesnar needing to say a word. However, Lashley and Lesnar are speaking up more for themselves and that is another interesting wrinkle to what could happen.

Opportunity continues to fall into the WWE’s lap. There are times when the company responds well with unfortunate changes of plans that come their way. Booking Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship caused a lot of people to roll their eyes, but there’s an opportunity to rebuild some of that goodwill if he’s booked against Bobby Lashley in a valuable, long-term feud.
