Britt Baker versus Thunder Rosa is the women’s match that can carry an entire AEW PPV showcase.

Wrestling fans are continuing to push AEW on its utilization of the women’s division. While the company has made some growth, there’s a lot of room for improvement. One step that must occur is the booking of a women’s match to headline a PPV. Thunder Rosa versus Britt Baker is the perfect match to do that at some point in 2022.

Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker put on a spectacle back in March when they battled in the Unsanctioned Lights Out match to headline that edition of AEW Dynamite. The images of Baker’s bloodied face and the carnage the two ladies left in the ring is a pivotal moment for both women in All Elite Wrestling.

Since this match, they’ve gone their separate ways to focus on other opponents and angles. They’ve been back in the ring together only once, during a six-woman tag match in November of 2021 where Rosa’s team with Anna Jay and Tay Conti picked up the win.

The trilogy match hangs over Britt Baker’s title run

The ominous cloud of another match with Rosa hangs over Baker’s title run. As AEW focused on the development of the TBS Women’s Title Tournament and the first champion, Jade Cargill, some of the momentum from Baker’s title run has left the room. She’s picked up important wins during her 200+ day run as champion, but none of her opponents came into the match seen as someone who would unseat the champion. AEW has invested a lot into Baker’s growth as a star for the company, which comes with an extensive run as champion.

This is exactly what makes the feud between Rosa and Baker that much more important. The outcome could either be the biggest victory for Baker to date or give Rosa the push as the next central figure for the women’s division. To date, they have a 1-1 record against each other in AEW singles matches. The tiebreaker is going to come and even the slightest hint towards it will create excitement to see the women back in the ring together.

AEW has a wealth of talent within its women’s division and needs to make a concerted effort immediately to better feature them on PPVs. To date, AEW has put on 13 PPVs (including events like Fyter Fest which were not traditional PPVs) with 121 total matches. Only 12 percent of the matches on the main card were women’s bouts. This percentage must increase and it’s equally important for the women to headline one of the major shows this year.

Thunder Rosa versus Britt Baker is the go-to women’s feud that can carry an entire AEW PPV. The company has the ability to build strong feuds, making them feel important until the moment the two competitors lock up in the center of the ring. That same type of care needs to hit a women’s match in 2022 and Rosa versus Baker is the perfect mix to be the first women’s match to headline an AEW PPV.
