WWE Spotlight: The underrated glowing legacy of Naomi
By J.C.
When looking at Naomi’s career in WWE up to this point shows a long line of success and milestones. From the very beginning, Naomi was clearly always part of the long-term superstar plan and it showed with how she continued to rise.
Naomi and her underrated milestones in WWE history.
The first time hearing about Naomi was during an interesting time in WWE history. By this point, Ohio Valley Wrestling was on its way out the door. Florida Championship Wrestling took over as the primary development platform for WWE.
This was before the glory days of the black and gold NXT brand where the shows were accessible to everyone. When keeping up with FCW, it was the same as trying to keep up with OVW. Most fans read about results on websites and maybe some highlight videos.
That’s where everything got interesting for Naomi’s time under a WWE development deal. She became the inaugural FCW Divas champion after defeating Serena. It was the start of a new era for FCW and the beginning for Naomi.
Naomi being the inaugural champion really shows how much confidence there was for her to be the first had to hold the title. It was even more impressive since it came during a time when talent in the diva’s division for the development was high.
The enthusiasm would continue through sporadic updates to see that Naomi was clearly special from the start. It was just a patient waiting game for her to be called up to the main WWE brands to consistently watch her on television.
After a stint on the NXT competition show, the waiting finally paid off as she made her main roster debut back in 2012 with Cameron as part of the Funkadactyls for Brodus Clay. The team of Cameron and Naomi were way ahead of their time as a team.
This was during a time when the emphasis was still on winning the WWE women’s or divas championship. They were tag team, but there were no WWE women’s tag team titles at the time. Naomi and her tag partner Cameron did what they had to do and were the highlight of Brodus Clay’s time.
Naomi eventually broke off on her own just to be put into another tag team with Tamina and Sasha Banks. The women’s tag team titles still didn’t exist in WWE, but Naomi had natural chemistry with Sasha and Tamina as they exhibited strong unity.
Naomi was being thrown in tag team situations where there was no women’s tag team title on the line and even though the rivalries had little or nothing at stake, Naomi found a way to make it work each time and fans were starting to get behind her.
In 2017, Naomi won the Smackdown women’s championship becoming the first black woman to win the title. Tragically, an injury cut her first reign short. Later that year, she came roaring back with a strong second Smackdown women’s championship reign.
It was a career-defining year for Naomi even with a rocky start with the injury. Naomi proved that she is a force to be reckoned with on the main roster as she enjoyed a long meaningful championship reign.
After Naomi lost the Smackdown women’s title, time went by, and even though Naomi backed away from the main title scene, she wasn’t through making history as she won the inaugural women’s battle royal at Wrestlemania 34.
It all came full circle with Naomi hitting yet another milestone of being the first to win something, this time instead of an FCW Divas championship, she won a first for the women’s division on the grandest stage of them all. She is also one of the only two to win it with the other being Carmella who won it the following year.
Later that same year, the WWE women’s tag team championships were introduced. It was the first time in a long time that Naomi didn’t have a consistent tag team partner by that point. Naomi gradually was phased out and not given a consistent rivalry that would lead to more.
Loyal fans of Naomi have not been shy about letting their voices be heard with how they feel about Naomi not being in the picture as much. Whenever she trends on social media, it’s typically an outpour of love, respect, and hope that she will be involved more often on WWE programming.
Another milestone came recently when she went against Charlotte Flair for the Smackdown women’s championship. The crowd was red hot for Naomi and even though Naomi came up short, she gained a moral victory.
It’s 2022 the fans are still red hot for her today and respect her as one of the most athletic women on the roster today. In today’s standards, having that loyalty for years from fans is not easy and should be a testament that grabs everyone’s attention.
The respect for Naomi can’t be denied and anything she will accomplish in the future will just be the cherry on top of the legacy she has already built that no one can dispute. One can imagine the momentum is starting to bubble for Naomi once more for her to add to her already solid legacy in WWE.
