Thunder Rosa must defeat Britt Baker at AEW Revolution
The card for AEW Revolution was quickly boosted by several matches announced in recent days. There’s a lot to look forward to with this card, from top to bottom. Britt Baker has a big match in front of her against Thunder Rosa. Looking at the current landscape of the women’s division in AEW, it’s time for Baker to lose that title and give the group a shoot in the arm with a new champion.
Just like Thanos in the MCU, Baker’s time as champion was inevitable. She captured the title back at Double or Nothing and has been champion 271 days. While it seems like there’s a push for Baker’s run as champion to eclipse Hikaru Shida’s 372-day run as champion, Baker’s time with the belt has hit a snag with momentum.
Yes, Baker is still featured week in, and week out, but her run as champion doesn’t have the substantive feud that encapsulates the tenures of her male counterparts. This is not a fault of her own, but it’s hard to find a long-term feud during her title reign that elevated the belt. Perhaps it is the lack of properly built champions or the number of title defenses she’s made, but Baker’s time as champion has lost some steam.
Plus, there’s the Thunder Rosa shadow hanging over Baker’s time in the spotlight. Sure, Baker has the lone “sanctioned” victory between the two women. The Lights Out match is often used as a crutch to “end” a feud and not have the desired performer take a loss that counts. But Rosa has and continues to remain exceptionally over with fans, regardless of where she performs. Look at her popping up in Warrior Wrestling, IMPACT, GCW, all the while leading the charge at Mission Pro Wrestling. Everywhere she goes fans respond in praise as the “Thunder Rosa Pop” has become a real thing.
Rosa picking up a win at AEW Revolution creates the space for some interesting matches in the immediate future with new contenders on the way. Serena Deeb, Leyla Hirsh, and others at the top of the list. And then there’s the eventual rematch with Baker down the line. While Rosa is champion, she could have her hands full with Jamie Hayter as that budding angle continues to play itself out. There are opportunities for something fresh at the top of the women’s division and one big step to getting there is seeing Baker take that loss at the PPV.
Britt Baker versus Thunder Rosa is a feud that can carry the women’s division to its first AEW PPV main event. While that will not happen at AEW Revolution, a step to keeping these two linked for the future would be for Rosa to snatch that title from around Baker’s waist with a victory. It’s time for a new champion to lead that group.
