Four names the WWE should ‘give everything’ to succeed
AEW is leading the charge in developing its young talent. The organization has a pool of performers that are less than 30 years of age, ready to lead the industry into the future. WWE has a talented roster of young wrestlers but doesn’t lean on them as often as they should, instead of focusing on more established stars and bringing back even older names.
WrestleVotes tweeted an interesting note on Monday that WWE Chairman and CEO, Vince McMahon is behind the 24-year-old Austin Theory and their source sees only “bigger and better things” for the new United States Champion. Wrestling Twitter took to their accounts to express their disgust with the idea; some holding out hope to be proven wrong, others calling Theory bland, and even more, pointing toward the serious allegations of sexual assault that were revealed during the Speaking Out movement.
If McMahon is going to finally get behind the talented, young performers on his roster, here are four individuals that should have his eye. Each one of them is younger than 30 years old and proven to not only be more than capable in the ring, but fans are ready to see the rocket strapped to their back to watch them go, to steal the phrase from one, “to the moon.”
Carmelo Hayes
Let’s start with the “former” A-Champion, Carmelo Hayes. At 27-years-old, Hayes has everything. He looks every part like the champion, he can perform in ring with abilities on par with some of the best seen today, and his personality is as big as necessary for someone who must believe they are qualified for the role.
Multiple-time Hall of Famer, Shawn Michaels, signed off on Hayes’s talent and that must say something about his ceiling for the future. Hayes has every part of the equation to become a top star and fans want to see him walking in and out of WrestleMania as the company’s top champion.
Rhea Ripley
Rhea Ripley has seen her fair share of success to this point. She’s held four titles during her stint with the WWE, and there are plenty more in her future. Even though she’s held titles at the highest level, there’s concern that recent booking will stunt her momentum. There was the questionable defeat to Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 36 and pairing her in tag teams instead of letting her shine on her own.
The rumors of her being a part of Edge’s stable created some interest in seeing what is in Ripley’s immediate future. She has the talent, abilities, looks, and fan interest to be a foundation for the women’s division for years to come.
Cameron Grimes
Cameron Grimes is 28 years old and brings 14 years of experience with him. His run on WWE NXT 2.0 is one of the better showings that the brand has to offer. While many of the other top names on that show have either jumped ship or gone to the main roster to face mediocrity, Grimes has continued to build himself as one of the top names NXT has to offer. He’s the current North American champion but has all the credentials needed to be the face of that brand, or any other within the WWE.
And if you aren’t convinced with what you’ve seen of Grimes lately, hop over to YouTube and check out his work as Trevor Lee in other promotions for a reminder of why he deserves to be on this list.
Liv Morgan
Liv Morgan is another 27-year-old that has shown flashes of stardom. There was a moment in 2021 when fans wanted to see her reach the top of the women’s division. The first letdown came at Money in the Bank where she failed to capture the briefcase. The second came later in the year when she was defeated by Becky Lynch in two bids for the Raw Women’s championship. Now that she and Ripley are split up, there’s budding concern that Morgan will once again be pushed into the middle of the pack.
Some will say that the verdict isn’t out on her abilities, but she’s shown the dedication to improve in the ring. Her continually evolving move set always delivers well when she’s given the opportunity to do so. And Morgan has a look that fans have been shown to embrace.
Liv Morgan may be the name on this list with the most room for improvement, but she’s one the company should get behind for the future.
Comparing Austin Theory to John Cena was certainly going to raise eyebrows. Only time will tell if McMahon and company were right about who has the ability to be a big star for the WWE. But instead of hedging bets on one person, these four names would shine if given the chance to do so like their colleague.
