WWE hot take: Ronda Rousey holding a title will always be controversial
By J.C.
When watching WWE, there are certain superstars who show up at certain times of the year. Ronda Rousey has fit the mold of wildcard appearance, and as she starts her second overall title reign in WWE, it may be a trend that causes the WWE women’s division to take unnecessary hits.
Ronda Rousey’s controversial WWE women’s title reigns.
When Ronda came back to WWE again, it left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths, including ours. For many years, WWE has had certain people show up at certain times when they need a nostalgia boost, and Ronda seems to fit that mold and it leaves a lot of questions for the future.
This isn’t just a WWE problem, it’s a problem with all major companies who sign certain competitors who aren’t there consistently or for the long run. WWE has made many mistakes that show a lack of faith in their own star power and storytelling abilities.
They have many potential stars and they released many other potential faithful stars, the most recent being Dakota Kai. It’s a head-scratcher why WWE would make those moves and continue to hold back on other stars who could be on the verge of a breakthrough.
There have been many names to be released by WWE over the last few years and it gutted the women’s division. Any of them could have had the potential to carry the women’s division, but the corporate office of WWE for whatever reason decided to let them go. However, the nostalgia stars were on standby.
It seemed the women’s division was exempt from that treatment, and fans held on to hope for the future, but now, it seems the same strategy is being utilized in the women’s division that caused frustration for the last few years with the men’s division.
It has reached a boiling point of frustration because fans know that Ronda could potentially disappear again. Since she won the Smackdown women’s title, it’s symbolic of a countdown for when Rousey could be gone once again.
The likelihood of Rousey sticking around after her reign is over is slim, even though there is a possibility of her sticking around a bit longer just to prove people like us wrong. If this happened, it would be a pleasant surprise.
Regardless, Rousey’s reign will remain controversial for the nostalgia game being played and it has a calendar schedule. There is a good possibility Rousey will disappear until the 2023 Royal Rumble once more to do it all over again.
The only major difference between Brock, Goldberg, The Rock, and others is that Ronda does not have a set time to disappear and it’s therefore not as predictable as the men’s division. As time goes by, fans may get a feel for Rousey’s schedule.
Overall, fans will have to sit through it and hope will lead to a meaningful reign in a similar fashion Becky Lynch had after she gained the title from Rousey at Wrestlemania a few years back. WWE will hopefully back off or try to contain the nostalgia-themed reigns in favor of actual momentum and giving someone their moment.
There is no telling what will happen, but one thing is for sure, most fans just want to see meaningful build-ups and not just nostalgia contention and title reigns for WWE. Fans will just have to wait and see how it will all unfold on Smackdown.
