Rey Mysterio is celebrating 20 years in the WWE and these stand out as some of his top moments.

Next Monday, WWE will be hosting Monday Night RAW live at Madison Square Garden. That night will mark the 20th anniversary of one of WWE’s most remarkable stars, Rey Mysterio. Before the WWE, Mysterio wrestled in numerous wrestling promotions such as AAA, ECW, and WCW. Although Mysterio was already a well-known wrestler, it was in the WWE that he became fully notarized. In 2002, he made his debut with the promotion, and from there, the rest was history.

Here are Rey Mysterio’s Top 5 Moments in the WWE.

5) Winning the WWE Cruiserweight Championship (SmackDown 2003)

The Cruiserweight Championship was the first singles title that Rey won in the WWE. He was in pursuit of the championship for the entire spring season. After a failed attempt at defeating then champion, Matt Hardy at WrestleMania XIX, Mysterio wanted to go all or nothing the next opportunity he received. Luckily, Mysterio did so by defeating Hardy with a surprise rollup to become champion. What made this moment significant was he got to win the title in his home state of San Diego in front of his wife and children.

4) Becoming WWE Tag Team Champions with Eddie Guerrero (No Way Out 2005)

From late 2004- early 2005, Mysterio was placed in the Tag Team Championship picture. Mysterio was part of a unique duo with his then partner, Rob Van Dam. Unfortunately, this team was short-lived due to Van Dam suffering a knee injury that put him out of action for a whole year. With Mysterio all alone, he had to find a new partner to regain the tag team titles. Mysterio’s partner ended up being his best friend, the late Eddie Guerrero. Mysterio and Eddie would go on and defeat The Basham Brothers at No Way Out 2005 to become tag team champions.

Although Eddie is no longer around, wrestling fans will always remember that the two best friends got to win tag team gold together for the first time in their wrestling careers.

3) Winning the WWE Championship (RAW 2011)

The summer of 2011 was a hectic time for the WWE Championship picture. CM Punk was on his way out of the WWE and he promised to take the championship with him after he beat John Cena at the Money in the Bank event. As a man of his word, Punk did so. With RAW not having a world title, Mr. McMahon made a strategic decision by making a tournament where the winner becomes the new WWE Champion.

The tournament involved Mysterio and seven other superstars. Mysterio would defeat The Miz in the finals to become WWE Champion. Sadly, Mysterio would drop the title later that night to John Cena. Although Mysterio held the championship for only over an hour, at least Mysterio won the big one besides the World Heavyweight Championship.

2) Winning the World Heavyweight Championship (WrestleMania 22)

At one point, Mysterio was allying with then World Heavyweight Champion, Batista. After Batista relinquished the World Heavyweight Championship due to an injured shoulder, Mysterio was on his own.

Mysterio would move on to bigger and better things. As the Royal Rumble was approaching, Mysterio decided to dedicate his win to Eddie, in hopes of becoming the World Champion at WrestleMania. Even after winning the Royal Rumble Match, it was still a bumpy road. At first, Randy Orton challenged Mysterio for his WrestleMania spot, which he won. Although Orton earned a shot for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, then SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long still added Mysterio to the match, thus making it a triple threat.

At the show of shows, Mysterio pulled a miracle by defeating both Orton and Kurt Angle to become World Heavyweight Champion for the very first time. With Eddie looking down at Rey that night, the sky was the limit for the Lucha underdog as he celebrated with his family and friends.

1) Becoming SmackDown Tag Team Champions with Dominik Mysterio (WrestleMania Backlash 2021)

In WWE, it’s quite common to see family members teaming up with one another. Usually, it’s either siblings or cousins appearing as partners. This time, Mysterio had an unlikely ally. That ally ended up being his son, Dominik Mysterio. Although Dominik is still green in the ring, he was willing to do whatever it took to team up with his father. Dominik has even proven his ground when he and his dad defeated Seth Rollins and Murphy in their first win as a team.

Months later, The Mysterios had their eyes on the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. At WrestleMania Backlash, history ended up being made when The Mysterios won tag team gold. They became the first father and son duo to win the tag titles. This had to be Rey’s biggest moment because it’s not always a wrestler who wins gold with their children.
