On this week’s AEW Dynamite, Tony Khan announced the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions to crown the recently vacated AEW World Championship, following the suspension of CM Punk. The tournament is comprised of former World and TNT Champions. The winner will be crowned at Grand Slam.

Bryan Danielson vs. Hangman Page kicked off the tournament on Wednesday. This was the third time they’ve faced each other, with Danielson getting his first win over the “The Anxious Millennial Cowboy” this week. It was a great match, despite Chris Jericho spoiling it in a promo just minutes before the match began. Jericho received a first-round bye and gave away that he’d be facing the “American Dragon” in a rematch from ALL OUT on Dynamite.

Rampage kicked off with two former TNT Champions, Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin. Guevara was accompanied by Tay Melo, so you know shenanigans and kissing was going to happen.

The two former champions have faced off several times and were relentless in the opening minutes of the match. Allin went for a Coffin Drop early and nailed a Code Red.

There was a spot with Guevara’s wedding ring. Melo continued to distract all match long. Their Jericho Appreciation Society cohort, Anna Jay A.S. distracted the ref. Melo slid Allin’s skateboard into the ring and then held his leg while he was on the turnbuckle. This allowed Guevara to low-blow his opponent. He took advantage by tossing Allin onto the skateboard before sliding it to Melo to get rid of the evidence. Guevara finished him off with the GTH.

Guevara will face Jon Moxley on Dynamite. Moxley also had a bye in the first round. Could we get “Le Sex Gods” against each other in the tournament finals? Or could it be two members of the Blackpool Combat Club?

Next. AEW must seize the moment to build excitement. dark
