AEW: Three new singles champions for the new year
AEW is enjoying a resurgence of momentum in the past few weeks. Full Gear was a kickoff moment that has led to several interesting shows and developing angles. With a new year on the horizon, there’s an opportunity to crown first-time champions in the company. With that in mind, here are three names that should find themselves with gold at some point in 2023.
Adam Cole
Adam Cole was one of the biggest signings for AEW in 2021. He entered and immediately went on a hot run but fell short of grabbing the AEW Championship. Since Forbidden Door, injuries pushed Cole to the sideline. If he can return in 2023, that would give the men’s division a massive boost at the top of the card.
Everything about Cole screams superstar. A long-term angle between him and MJF or Ricky Starks is the type of action that AEW fans live for. Plus, Cole is the type of performer that fans would want to see win what would be the biggest championship of his career.
Eddie Kingston
Eddie Kingston is the trump card that AEW has yet to play. Ever since he interrupted Cody Rhodes, he’s taken over as the “heart” of fans that adore the product. Multiple times, the loud voices paying money and watching at home call for Kingston to win the big one, but that victory keeps slipping through his hands. It’s still surprising that he’s yet to hold a championship in the company, but that should change next year in what would be a big moment for the promotion.
Kingston has an individual on their roster that could be the Mick Foley of the promotion. Foley was a huge underdog champion for WWE, and even though he didn’t have lengthy runs with the belt, they were all meaningful along the way. Kingston could fit in that role for AEW and would excel along the way.
Kris Statlander
Fans are ready to see Kris Statlander have a big moment in AEW. She’s suffered multiple injuries, and each time she returns, her fan backing continues to grow. There were many reports that pointed to Statlander as the pick to be the one to dethrone Jade Cargill. The visual of those two ladies standing face to face is big enough, but hopefully, that is still the course once Statlander is cleared for action.
Be ready for a massive pop when Statlander walks through the curtain at some point in 2023. Her time is near and holding a championship should be in her near future.
