Darby Allin is a name that AEW has built over time and if his heel turn is to come, it should require him retiring his mentor, Sting.

Father Time is undefeated and he’s coming for Sting. At 64 years of age and 37 years in professional wrestling, it’s understandable why Sting has long been known as “The Icon.” But at some point, his time in front of the camera will end. And if that is coming sooner, rather than later, AEW should turn to Darby Allin as the man who puts him away.

Allin was one of the first individuals tagged as a prospect to watch in the early days of AEW. He was given the opportunity to go right into a feud with Cody Rhodes, helping him establish himself as a name of the future. He earned his slot among the “Pillars” of AEW and was the guy who helped set the TNT Championship on its early path as the company’s worker’s belt.

Now, he’s coming out of a feud with MJF, Jungle Boy, and Sammy Guevara. At some point, AEW will revisit these four men in the same ring at the same time, but there’s a lot of work to do before that happens. Allin is seemingly heading toward some interactions with Orange Cassidy, which may make him the next guy to hold that AEW International Championship. But imagine if he loses that feud as well, and that is the straw that sets off his villain story. The story sends him right through his mentor in Sting.

Both Sting and AEW know his place on the roster. Unlike Goldberg in WWE, he’s not killing off the momentum of fan favorites. Instead, he steps in and provides exciting moments that fans have long come to enjoy – reminding many why they fell in love with professional wrestling. He’s been a great addition to AEW and has a new catalog of highlights to his career. That is why Allin is the perfect man to bring all that to a halt.

Imagine the heat that will erupt if Allin turns on Sting and blames him for his recent failures. AEW does an excellent job building moments that fans know will come, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the fallout – see the reaction Don Callis gets every time he’s on camera. Seeing the same thing happen between Allin and Sting would break the hearts of many and create one of the biggest heels currently in the company. Seeing Allin destroy Sting during a segment, then again during a non-sanctioned match of some sort that ends Sting’s career would make him a hated man among the most hated men in wrestling.

AEW does an excellent job with many of its characters. Darby Allin is one of those individuals that has bloomed into an important member of that roster. At some point, the company will turn him into a heel character. To get there, he should be the one to end Sting’s run in wrestling and send the famed competitor off to retirement.
