Mercedes Mone needs to sign with AEW
Ever since appearing at AEW All In, the rumors of Mercedes Mone signing with AEW have been a large topic of conversation around the AEW women’s division. Even as she is hurt with a broken ankle, people still discuss her impact, and that’s why she needs to sign with AEW.
Mercedes Mone’s run in New Japan and Stardom has been a ton of fun so far, but it is time that she reestablishes herself as an American star. With the relationship ties between NJPW and AEW, there is probably a pathway for her to still be able to wrestle her limited matches overseas and then become a main star in AEW.
The reason Mercedes left WWE and American wrestling in the first place was because she felt that even though she was trying to rebuild the WWE women’s tag team titles, she wasn’t being respected as a star by the company. Rebuilding is a key characteristic that is often used surrounding the AEW women’s division, but that word certainly wouldn’t be used if Mercedes Mone was at the top of the division.
Whether she captures the AEW Women’s World Championship, or the TBS championship, which feels like the bare minimum if she were to sign with the company, the AEW women’s division would have a new leader. Mone has wanted to expand her wrestling competition, and AEW is just the place to do that.
Mone has had some of her dream matches in Japan, but imagine her squaring off with the likes of Jamie Hayter, Hikaru Shida, or Willow Nightingale again. The women have been gatekept to under 10-minute matches for a long long time in AEW, and Mone could change that completely.
There will never have been as big of a women’s signing as Mone, who would lift the division to massive new heights. I think of AEW’s signing of Saraya, which some said would change the game, but that was massively wrong. Mone’s work rate is levels above Saraya, and their star power is near equal, meaning only more time and more prominent spots for anyone near Mone.
Mercedes Mone has a chance to change women’s wrestling forever again by going to AEW. Mone can bring better opportunities to the talent that is already there, and reestablish herself as a star in America. Look at the similar path to Jay White, it has worked out tremendously for both parties.
The benefits are there for both sides, and I hope after her ankle injury heals her first priority is putting pen to paper with AEW.
