Malakai Black has the potential to be a singles star for AEW

Now that House of Black is no longer the Trios champs, slotting Malakai Black into space as a top name in the singles division is the right move.

The House of Black has the potential to be an important stable of All Elite Wrestling. Malakai Black, Brody King, Buddy Matthews, and Julia Hart each offer something different to the roster that can be a catalyst to their rising to main event talents. To kick off that transition, AEW must find a way to improve how Black is featured as a threat at the highest levels.

Black’s usage in AEW is one of the many situations that has left fans and media members scratching their heads. He came in uber hot in 2021, squashing Cody Rhodes along the way. Then silence. Fast forward to 2022 and the House of Black was formed. Fans were elated to see what this meant for the three men and women. The answer was a 175-day run as AEW World Trios Champions. But now that those belts are around the waist of The Acclaimed, it is interesting to see where the group goes from here.

Does Black still fit in as a singles champion in AEW? MJF, Jon Moxley, and Luchasaurus (or Christian Cage), are singles champions for the men’s division. In their own ways, they fit the aesthetic of AEW. As a character, Black seems like an outlier on the roster. The fans love him, but it is hard to see an AEW where Tony Khan shines the spotlight on Black at the top of the roster. Not doing so would be a big miss on a talented performer who can hold his own with any of the stars in the promotion.

There are so many names that Black can face on his climb to a title as a singles performer. Think of matches against the likes of Andrade, Kenny Omega, Swerve Strickland, and several others. Black against each of them would be exceptional matches. According to Cagematch, Black’s last singles match was back in June 2022 when he qualified for the match to crown the first AEW All-Atlantic Champion (now International Champion). Now, is the time to get back to having a singles performer like that on the roster.

When Malakai Black was known as Aleister Black on the WWE roster, many wanted to see him get his shot higher up the roster. That moment never came. Black is now a member of AEW and his fans are still pushing to see him in the limelight. He’s achieved some success as a member of a unit. It would be interesting to see him get some time as a singles star while Matthews and King take on the tag team division and Hart goes after women’s gold.
