ATHENA must win the women's AEW Owen Hart Cup Tournament

Several names are involved, but Athena taking home the win would be a more intriguing story.

The Owen Hart Tournament is back for the 2025 edition. The brackets are set to be revealed on the upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite. Whenever All Elite Wrestling puts on a tournament there’s a lot of excitement among fans. AEW is where the best wrestle, but this tournament should push forward the most important story in the women’s division. ATHENA must come out on top.

Athena and Mercedes Mone are heading toward an important faceoff. They came to blows during the March 29 edition of AEW Collision. Mone picked up a victory over Billie Starkz, then denigrated her ability in the ring. Taking things a step further, she’s called out the person who has trained Starkz, getting the attention of your “Forever Champion.”

Athena versus Mercedes Mone is a can't miss match in AEW

Athena versus Mercedes Mone is the women’s match that must be the main event an AEW PLE. How does that happen? That’s up to Tony Khan to figure it out. But with the proper booking, there’s no reason these two shouldn’t be presented as the biggest angle in the company at that time.

That brings the conversation back to the Owen Hart Tournament. Starkz, Mone, Athena, Jamie Hayter, Kris Statlander, and Thunder Rosa have announced their involvement in the tournament. Two other women are set to be announced to bring the draw to eight. With Mone, Starkz, and Athena all announced, it will be interesting to see how the tournament is built out. Mone and Athena will be on the opposite side of the bracket for sure, with the only way they can face off being a match in the finals.

Will Athena be the first woman to beat Mone, setting up a rematch with the titles on the line? Or will Mone get the win in the tournament, building to something different between the two women? There are other important names in the tournament, but none have the same trajectory as Mercedes Mone and Athena. Mone winning would further her push as the newest version of the “Belt Collector,” but there’s certainly more intrigue in Athena taking things in the end.

The Owen Hart Cup Tournament is set to begin. AEW’s stacked women’s division will have several representatives ready to step up. When looking at the field, Mercedes Mone and ATHENA are the favorites to take the title. However, things would be much more interesting if Athena were the last woman standing.
