A major match is planned for All Elite Wrestling this year. According to Fightful Select, Mercedes Mone versus ATHENA is on the radar. Much sooner than expected as well, as the report mentions it is possible for AEW Dynasty. Tony Khan, this is the match to book as the main event of the evening.
ATHENA and Mone are the two of the three most important women on the AEW roster today. Along with Toni Storm, they’ve shown what happens when Tony Khan finally puts the faith in the women’s division as he has with their male colleagues. In their own way, Storm and Mone shine in the spotlight in AEW, while ATHENA holds it down in Ring of Honor.
According to the Fightful report, this match has been the plan and could happen for AEW Dynasty. AEW Dynasty is already shaping up to be a big card. Kenny Omega is set to defend the AEW International title against Ricochet and “Speedball” Mike Bailey. Toni Storm is defending the AEW Women’s Championship against Megan Bayne. Jon Moxley will take on Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Title. Adding Athena versus Mercedes Mone to that card makes it even bigger.
If those are the main title matches for the show, Mone versus Athena must main event. The unwritten rule in professional wrestling is that the men’s championship must go on last, but that ceiling has long been shattered, with Mone playing a part in that history in WWE. Seeing her do the same in All Elite Wrestling would be huge.

Think about the story. The “Forever Champion” is taking onus with Mone for how the latter treated her protégé, Billie Starkz. That’s enough to add to the situation but imagine if the match becomes a Title vs Title ordeal. Mone calls herself the belt collector, and Athena has a shiny title that she’s held for more than 800 days. What if Mone takes that belt to add to her growing list? Or will Athena be the woman to snap Mone’s undefeated streak? There’s nothing bigger on the card than that angle right there.
Tony Khan knows that Mercedes Mone versus Athena is a big-time match in AEW. But if he truly books AEW for the “sickos” then this is the match to main event AEW Dynasty. If he genuinely loves professional wrestling, then this is the match to put on last on April 6. There’s no other way to go.
