Kenny Omega's return is a momentum-builder for All Elite Wrestling
As of this writing, it has been 381 since Kenny Omega stepped into the ring to compete. A lot of things have changed since then. For example, the man he faced, Ethan Page, is no longer with AEW. There’s already an in-ring return date for Omega, at least when it comes to New Japan Pro Wrestling, but there’s a growing rumor that his AEW return date is coming much sooner than expected. According to Fightful Select, Omega’s return has “been discussed as happening by the December 28 World’s End PPV.”
On December 18, there was a vignette promoting his comeback. The Fightful Select report did not confirm what Omega’s return capacity will be, which raises questions about whether he’ll be in the ring or something else. Whether he returns with a match that evening or kicks off a major angle, Omega’s return will be a huge, momentum-inducing moment that AEW needs.
AEW needs something. Right now, the biggest angle in the company is Jon Moxley and the Death Riders attempting to take over the company. However, they don’t feel like the same type of threat that the NWO was back in the days of WCW. Jay White, “Hangman” Adam Page, and Orange Cassidy are booked as the top foils to that group, but it feels like none of them have a chance taking the AEW World Championship at World’s End. This is the most important feud on the show as it heads into another “new era” in 2025, yet it doesn’t have the juice needed to draw in attention. Kenny Omega’s return helps change that and so many other aspects of the show.
Kenny Omega immediately creates several interesting matches at the top of All Elite Wrestling. Of course, he has work to do against The Elite. Kazuchika Okada is in the Continental Classic, but The Elite have not felt as important as they initially did. Omega returning and putting them in his crosshairs immediately changes that. Omega versus Okada is a main event matchup on any show at any point in the world and the build to it is right there.
But that’s not the only place where Omega has an impact. Think about him against any of the members of The Death Riders, Adam Page, or Jay White. He fits right into that angle as someone who would want to defend AEW with all his might. Think about Omega versus Kyle Fletcher or Will Ospreay. Again, both of those matches are game changers when drawing fan attention. There are so many pairings and stories that could work as the perfect way to re-introduce him to the company.
Kenny Omega is coming back and fans should be excited. If he truly walks through the doors at World’s End, AEW will have a strong amount of momentum heading into 2025.
