Professional wrestling is getting a major name back in the ring. Kenny Omega returns to action for the first time as he’s set to take on Gabe Kidd at Wrestle Dynasty on Sunday, January 5.

Kenny Omega is one of the most important names in professional wrestling, and that’s especially true in All Elite Wrestling. One of the “Founding Fathers” of the promotion is headed back to action after being forced to the sidelines thanks to a bout with diverticulitis. The news was announced via New Japan Pro Wrestling.

“Kenny Omega’s altercation with Gabe Kidd backstage at Power Struggle on November 4 has been the talk of the wrestling world for several weeks,” NJPW stated. “This week saw Kenny Omega issue an interview saying that after consideration and discussion with NJPW officials, he was willing to wrestle Kidd at the Tokyo Dome. That challenge was accepted, first on social media and then in Yokohama by Kidd, who took to the microphone to yell that ‘it doesn’t matter what NJPW or the fans want, what matters is what I want.’ Kidd’s expletive-laced tirade, at the end of a violent and dominant brawl against Chase Owens and KENTA, has now been recognized, and the match is official.”

And with that said, Omega’s first match back is happening outside an AEW ring. There’s some blowback to that idea, as some are concerned with his recent streak of injuries, which competing outside of AEW can put him in a position to be re-injured. Even though Wrestle Dynasty is a collaborative event between NJPW, AEW, STARDOM, Ring of Honor, and CMLL, it’s still not the setting that some want to see.

Kidd is the current NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion, and there’s no word on whether the title will be on the line in this match. Omega is also stepping into the ring against a member of the newest iteration of The Bullet Club, the very faction that he used to lead.

This is a big match to welcome Omega back into the fold. It will be interesting to see how he performs at 41 years of age and off such an extended recovery. Of course, he’s going to look to be the “Best Bout Machine” once again. But Father Time is undefeated. Either way, Kenny Omega coming back into professional wrestling is a big deal and it is one that should capture the attention of fans worldwide.
