The free agency race in professional wrestling continues, as another important piece is off the board. Kevin Owens has re-signed with WWE, as reported by Fightful Select on Friday, February 7.

According to the Fightful report, Owens’s contract was expected to expire at “the end of 2024 or the start of 2025.” There was speculation about a new deal, but no confirmation on whether the deal was offered and signed. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful confirmed that the deal had been made, and Owens is set to stay with the WWE for the time to come.

This news comes at the same time as Owens’s posting a hint that he’d re-signed on social media in his own way. He took to Twitter to post the following which got people talking about his contract status.

“If you guys help support my daughter’s Girl Scout troop by buying some cookies, I promise to keep wrestling for at least 4 years, 11 months, and 22 days more.”

Kevin Owens would have drawn a heavy interest in free agency

Kevin Owens is recognized as one of the most beloved figures in professional wrestling. His career arc has helped him build a lot of goodwill among fans, and in the eyes of some he’s one of the few unproblematic people in the industry. This made his signing with WWE 2014 a touching moment at that time. It was a career culmination of sorts for the former Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion.

The Fightful Select report also confirmed that All Elite Wrestling “long maintained interest in Owens.” He has a long friendship with The Young Bucks, and it is easy to see how KO’s style of character and presentation would have worked in AEW. He’d be the right type of fit, especially in the eyes of fans who want to see the promotion get back to what made it the most interesting when it first got off the ground in 2019.

Kevin Owens’s further impact in WWE

Owens’s social media post implies that he’s re-signed a five-year deal. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how he’s utilized on the roster. He’s coming out of a main-event feud with Kevin Owens and was unsuccessful in capturing the WWE Undisputed World Championship at the Royal Rumble. After the January 3rd episode of Monday Night Raw, it looks like he is heading toward an angle with Sami Zayn. While they’ve battled many times in the past, there’s hope that this will be the best story told yet with Triple H’s creative direction in place. Owens and Zayn are two of the best performers in the business today, and this is a great opportunity to show just how fantastic they are in the business.

All Elite Wrestling may have had the better 2024 with free agent signings, but WWE is getting off to a strong start in 2025. Re-signing Kevin Owens is an important move and one that shores up the main event scene for years to come.
