Mercedes Mone is running out of room for her belt collection. The former WWE superstar and current AEW TBS Champion secured two new championships for her coffers, bringing the total up to eight. As critics try to use the moment as a detraction, her fans are right there to continue the support. Some wonder if it is going too far, but in reality, it is not going far enough.
On July 27, Mercedes Mone defeated Diana Strong to become the first Prime Time Wrestling Women’s Champion and the BestYa Wrestling Women’s Champion. This brings her total haul up to eight belts, which include the two previously mentioned, the AEW TBS Championship, The RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Championship, The Queen of Southside Championship, CMLL World Women’s Championship, the European Wrestling Association’s Women’s Championship and the 2025 AEW Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament Championship.
That’s quite the run for someone who many felt wasn’t booked to her fullest potential while on the WWE roster. But how will it all play out? Two interesting points on the horizon will answer that question.
First, Mone did not defeat Toni Storm at AEW All In 2025 to capture the AEW Women’s World Championship. That match will be an easy candidate for the top match across all wrestling this year. Storm and Mone told an important story heading into the PPV, and they delivered with the story they told during the match.
The aftermath leads to Mone trying to continue her play of being the CEO and the best woman in the game when there’s clear evidence she’s not. At some point, she’s going to defeat Storm for that title. But in order for that to happen, she’s going to have to lose everything along the way.
That is the point that makes it so interesting to see her hold all these titles for independent organizations around the world. Not only is Mone winning these titles, but she’s defending them along the way. At some point, she’s going to start losing those belts, one by one. Along the way, she will put the spotlight on other performers around the world who fans should want to see. That’s a vital step to give back to the industry, while also telling an important story. In order for her to eventually get to the AEW Women’s World Championship, she’s going to have to lose everything she’s built.
Mercedes Mone is one of the most entertaining wrestlers in the world today. Fans may “complain” about her capturing title after title, but this story is going to lead to something, and the entirety of women’s wrestling will be better for it.
