There aren’t a lot of things that haven’t been done in wrestling history. This is why it’s important to recognize the major moments as they come. Mercedes Mone has once again etched her name in a special place in history, as she becomes the first woman to ever complete the “foursome of wrestling,” meaning she’s performed in Madison Square Garden, The Tokyo Dome, Wembley Stadium, and Arena Mexico. Mone continues to prove that she’s the GOAT when it comes to women’s wrestling.
This may be an accolade that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it is one that cannot be ignored. To perform as a premier talent in each of those venues speaks to Mercedes Mone’s impact as a top name in the business. To reach this achievement, one has to compete for the biggest organizations in wrestling, which Mone has done throughout her career.
Mercedes Mone continues to break down barriers
Let’s think of some of the great moments that Mone has achieved. She and Bianca Belair hold a special place in history, being the first two Black women to main event a WrestleMania. But that moment is even more important when you recognize this is the first time two Black performers have headlined the showcase event. Looking at the trends going on in today’s WWE, that moment may never happen again.
What makes Mone so special is that she gives back to the profession in such a clear and overt way. Her detractors look for the smallest of points to try to discredit her work, but look at how she continues to try to put women’s wrestling on the map while showcasing performers that mainstream fans may not know.
Take Stephanie Vaquer, the current NXT Women’s Champion, as an example. Vaquer originally tried out for WWE and was not considered for a roster spot. Fast forward to 2023 and 2024, when Vaquer has two great matches with Mone, and suddenly she’s in the spotlight for WWE, getting the opportunity to perform in her dream organization and being featured as one of the key pieces of WWE’s future in women’s wrestling. Fans jokingly point to this match with Mone as the catalyst for that, but it is hard to deny it when looking at the evidence.
Mone recently traveled over to England to put on a great match against Kanji for the RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Title in a small venue. She was easily the only recognizable name on the show. Months before, she took on Indi Hartwell at a House of Glory event, giving the former WWE star the biggest match of her career to date.
Mercedes Mone is one of those talents who deserves all the praise for what she does in the ring and outside of it. Stories pop up all the time about members of the women’s division stifling the growth of others, but here’s one woman who continues to attempt to put the division on her back, not only in the company where she performs, but for all the women who strap up their boots. When the time comes, and it may already be here, it will be hard to look at Mercedes Mone’s contributions to wrestling and deny that she’s the best to ever step into the ring.
